Hey there, heard about this forum from reddit/darkroom.

I’m cleaning out a relative’s darkroom and have lots of stuff, some of it free, some for sale, and trying to figure out the best market, etc etc.

This post is mostly just a test (sorry about). I couldn’t figure out how to post in the other topics. THAT SAID If anyone has pointers on how I can sell stuff, please let me know.

Post on ebay and link to here?

And if ebay, how do I find the best price for a packet of developer (powder), for example? Bid? Buy now? Or just give away randomly?

I’m attaching a couple photos, partially as a test but partially to give an idea of what I have. I’ve been told I have thousands of dollars worth of equipment and supplies. Maybe that’s being optimistic, but... you know!

Most used darkrooms are just sold locally via Craigslist for a lump sum and local pick up.

Or

You could post a list of what you have with pictures on this forum (under For Sale of course) and entertain offers from Photrio users. There could be someone nearby who would be interested in making you an offer.

Shipping chemicals and very large equipment is quite difficult, but it can be done, but it has be a pretty desirable bit of equipment to justify the enormous expense, time an effort.

I don't see thousands of dollars represented here, but you haven't shown the equipment either.

Yeah, it is. I wanted to post here before signing up as a subscriber. There seems to be plenty to navigate both on this site and the whole selling process, so I wanted to test things out first.
 

Thanks for responding. Alas, I’m in MT so the local pickup option, which I’m trying, isn’t great. Also doesn’t help that I have no idea what stuff is worth, but that’s another issue. Before I become a subscriber and start selling, i wanted to get a little more familiar with this forum, thus the post.

And finally, the photos were just part of the test, and not nearly everything I have but just a representative of some of the stuff. The pix of the film that I have and posted on reddit made folks there salivate...
 
Do not delete the posting after the item is sold.
  1. We do not need to save the bandwidth.
  2. It provides a record about the items if there is any disputes or problems.
  3. It provides others with an idea of what was asked for items.
 
As someone who shops on eBay, let me put in my 2-cents worth. Personally, I prefer "Buy it now."

If I see something I want, and the price seems fair, I buy it - if not, I keep looking. I never bid on any auction item, because the process of getting to the final price is too tedious. If I Search for something on eBay, I use a filter to exclude Auction items, because I don't even want to know about them. I may not be a typical eBay buyer, but that's the only way it works for me.
 
I agree. It sorts out the people who have either unrealistic expectations of value or people who may potentially bail on an auction after a week when the item doesn't bring the anticipated return.
 
...that said, there appear to be plenty of eBay users who bid (sometimes feverishly) on auction style listings.

If you really just want to sell an item, list it as a pure auction with no reserve and a very low starting bid. Add good detailed photos, select the 35 cent gallery option add some honest description of the item...play by the rules and accept the outcome.
 
You might talk to the folks at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography, in your hometown.

They might be able to connect you with someone interested in darkroom stuff without having to ship stuff anywhere.

(I have absolutely no connection to these folks, other than visiting their gallery occasionally over the years. I have relatives in Hamilton. )

You might also talk to these folks... https://darkroomofmontana.com/. I know nothing about them, they came up in a search fro public darkrooms in Missoula.

Lastly, also talk to the folks at the University of MT School of Art. You might be able to make a student or two happy if you are not looking to get top dollar.

Just a few random thoughts... only possibly useful!
 
Photographer's Formulary is also in Montana -- they might also be able to point you to people who want the stuff you need to sell.

But yes, it's a really big state; I've driven across it a couple times (grew up in Idaho, and lived in Seattle for many years, with occasional trips east and I-90 through Montana the most sensible way to get there).
 

Thanks for your 2 cents. The hardest part about this is figuring out an item’s value, especially with older materials/chemicals that may or may not still be good. I just watched some videos on eBay best practices, and the consensus from the seller’s point of view is to have an auction starting at $1 with no reserve: if you’re interested, bid $1 and see how others feel. This seems to be the best way to establish value.

So, you might be missing out!
 

Thanks! Alas, I’m a few steps ahead of you. RMSP said outright they only do digital now. Darkroom and UM said to put stuff on craigslist (which I have). You do remind me that there’s an obscure place up in Condon, I heard about them but forgot to do a follow-up. I’ll have to get on that...
 
Thanks everyone for chiming in! I really appreciate the feedback and support. I also realize that one of the biggest issues is pricing: figuring out the value of obscure and old equipment and stuff is a little challenging. If you have suggestions, I’m all ears...
 

I'd be very interested in those two boxes of Kodak 4x5 HIE film!!!
 
The photograph on Reddit showed 2 boxes of Panatomic-X in 4x5 (wow!), Verichrome Pan (probably 120), and a lot of Plus-X in 220. Those will definitely be of interest to film photographers. I could not tell what was in some of the boxes. If you can offer them here on Photrio, that would be awesome.
 

Yes, I working on the best approach to sell it. I think just posting it here and saying “have at it, folks!” Wouldn’t be the smartest move...

I did not mean offer for free. Check sold listings on eBay and offer your film at approx. those prices. The fact that you can prove frozen storage is worth a premium in the offering price.

Absolutely. And especially well-stored films that have been out of production for a good while, like Plus-X and Verichrome Pan. Sheet size Panatomic X -- well, I won't be able to afford any, and I'm not a slow film guy in general, but I guarantee you won't have it for long after you post it for sale, if your prices are reasonable.
