New TMY (400tmy2) where?

I am very interested in evaluating the new TMax-400 in 120 and 135. Does anyone out there know a US retail vendor shipping 120 and 100-foot 135 400TMY2 with any certainty? I've got a decent supply of the 400TMY, but I want to figure out what I need to know about the new stuff, but I've not seen anything useful so far about a vendor consistently shipping this. Ideas?

I've been looking for 120 as well. As of Saturday, Calumet in Chicago just had the old stuff.

Amazingly

We have some 35mm 24exp rolls here at my local (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) photo store. I've shot 4 rolls so far. Nice stuff. If you'd like me to buy you a roll or two please PM and we'll arrange it.

I guess Kodak wasn't kidding when they said "stock replacement". Apparently we have to consume all of the "old" TMY from the supply pipeline before the new stuff can flow.

No joy at Freestyle, B&H, Adorama, Calumet. My local store has a few rolls in 35mm, but none yet in 120. I suppose that reflects the relative consumption rates (popularity) of the two formats. Of course, I need 120!

That's sad. I think it's important for picky users to try new products out before old and known products vanish. That Sexton likes it is fine, but I'm not John Sexton, and my preferences may be different. Is the new film to my liking, and can I give it a good trial (30 rolls or so) before I've no choice to stock up on old TMY?

Trust me, you'll love it. Unless you do only contact printing (and who does only contact printing with 120 rollfilm? maybe a half dozen photographers) it's a dramatic improvement in tonality. And nobody has been a more strident proponent of the old TMY than yours truly.

Selling old stock first? I wonder how that works exactly. Is each stockist able to order new stuff once it has run out of old or is it sent the old on re-ordering from Kodak's warehouse until all Kodak's stock in the warehouse has gone? Pity if you were amongst the last stockists to re-order as the old stock ran out. You could have all old stock for several weeks while the shop down the street which ordered immediately after the old had ran out is full of new stuff.

Doesn't seem to have arrived in the U.K. at all yet. If new stock in the U.K. depends on finishing all old stock then we can only hope you U.S. APUGers as the biggest consumers buy enough old so we can get the new.

The special UK/US relationship can only be taken so far!

I guess my big problem is that as far as taste is concerned, I have faith in only direct experience, and enough that I've gotten over my initial technical foibles with the new film stock. Thus I'm interested in finding a bulk roll and a couple of pro-packs of 120.

In Los Angeles add Samys and Ritz. There is neither 135 nor 120 MY-2 available.

What you said. Kodak won't ship any TMY-2 until all of the old TMY is gone. Of course, that's on a per format basis, so which ever format is most used and/or had the least inventory in stock is the one we'll be seeing first.

I have managed to get a few rolls in 35mm and love it and none in 120. It's such an improvement over the old stuff that in my mind Kodak can sit on the old stuff till pigs fly. I am not going to buy a product I hate for the purposes of running out stock to be able to buy one I like.

Rumor has it that the production run contains UV blockers. The test rolls I got did not, so my Azo contact prints were much improved over old TMY.

I would imagine, however, that on enlarging paper you wouldn't be affected. It should have about the same response as TMX, which has the UV blocking in the backing.

If, however, you make your 120 contact prints on Azo, don't buy a lot of this new film until you test it. You may be very disappointed.

If they ruin the new sheet film with UV blockers, I'm switching to either FP4+ or Tri-X. Probably Tri-X.

what size film? a call to B&H connected me with a clueless salesperson, who hd evidently not received Kodak's memo re a "new" TMY. They may already be shipping TMY-2 in 120, but the website doesn't reflect it if so.

Calumet, OTOH, expects to be shipping the new stuff in 120 in a week or so, and will update the item on their website when they start shipping it.

There's no mistaking it. It says TMY-2 on the "shrink wrap" that encloses each roll, the paper backing and the negatives. The box itself has a big red "splash" on it that indicates that this film is the sharpest 400 speed film available. It says "NEW" in big letters. I can't recall the expiration date. I'll check later.

Note: The development times are definitely shorter with this film. You'll have to retest.

120 size. I didn't order any 35mm. I ordered 50 rolls and all of it was TMY-2.

ciocc, how did you order? By phone or on line? Did you ask about the new vs old version?

I am down to the wire on a dead line to acquire film for a trip and I would really like to get the TMY-2. So on based on your experience I might order 50 rolls today as well.

Ok well I just called B&H and the salesman told me that he has been told that they are shipping the new version now and so I ordered some. I asked if he was getting hundreds of inquiring calls like mine and he said yes they are.

Can anyone tell me whether the Kodak 120 backing paper has more legible numbers than Ilford's? I just can't make out the Ilford numbers very well when I look through the red windows on my folders.

Yes, much easier to see the numbers with Kodak backing paper.

With an upcoming trip, today I inquired of the online "chat" help at B&H regarding the new T-Max 400 in 35mm and was promptly told that (i) yes they do have it, (ii) yes they are shipping it, but (iii) the B&H website catalogue numbers have not changed and so you won't "see" the change on their website.

I placed an order this afternoon and this evening received an email confirming shipment for Friday delivery. Hurray!

If Friday I receive the old version – which I could have bought at the local Ritz Camera – I’ll report back.
