I started a Pinhole Photography & Cameras Group on LinkedIn.

I'll try to post interesting stories and projects on a regular basis (only non-commercial & pinhole related).

We have 39 members now and it would be nice if more pinhole photographers joined us.
So, I would like to invite you to visit & join us and post your ideas, questions, work and tips.

And don't forget: the next "Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day" is on Sunday April 28th, 2013.

Anyone anywhere in the world who makes a pinhole image on that day can participate by uploading his image afterwards (no costs).
And check the site for a pinhole workshop or gathering in your area.

Hi Bert,

I enjoy playing with pinhole photography, but try to stay away from the big "social networking" sites like LinkedIn and Facebook.

I see there are "groups" here on APUG, but I'm too new here to know anything about them. Seems like a "pinhole" group would be a good one if it doesn't already exist. I just quickly looked and only saw one for zero image cameras, but I might have missed something.

Hello Ned,
I had the same thought yesterday when I was browsing through the groups myself. There are several interesting groups, but not a general "pinhole photography & cameras" group. The Zero Image group is "only" focusing on the Zero cameras (also nice).
Shall we start a group on APUG? I'll have to check what the rules & conventions are on APUG, but sounds good to me. I saw that most groups aren't very active, but let's give it a try.
What do you think? If you're willing to post & support as well, I'm willing to check it out at APUG and to start up the group.
Let's find out if we are alone out there, carrying a black box with a hole in it ......

There is already a fairly active APUG Forum for pinhole photography. I guess I'm one of those Olde Fartes who has a bit of difficulty understanding the point of having multiple fora and the allure of social networking. I admit to being registered with Facebook and LinkedIn, but the latter seems to attempt to force registrants to fit into pre-constructed categories which I found didn't fit very well with my activities; perhaps because I'm not promoting myself as a business. I signed up after being solicited by a friend in an art club I belong to, but I still don't quite get what it's supposed to do for me.

I do dabble in pinholery, and look forward to WPPD each April, but otherwise I reckon I'm to be written off a curmudgeonly sort!

It seems you have to be a contributer to be able to open a group, so I finally became one to support this fine APUG site anyway.
I also started a "Pinhole Photography & Cameras Group" on this forum.

Hi Dave,

I've been programming computers for 41 years and do it for a living ( along with a lot of mathematics and statistics and other endeavors that require thinking and then programming. ) I actually do not have accounts with any "social networking" site... I can hardly keep up with my email! Forums like APUG to me are the best of all, like the old usenet newsgroups, because you can come back and read them later and do it in your own time. It's also astonishing just how much information has been recorded in the APUG forums... a search on any topic is like having an encyclopedia of photography in your fingers, along with a huge collection of experts willing to take time to help. I hope there is a good backup of it somewhere... it is a valuable collection.

If I understand your point, you're suggesting that we just make the pinhole forum more active instead of making a separate group? I haven't been on APUG long enough to understand how the groups and forums are different. But I'll be very happy to participate in either or both!

I checked all 116 groups, but didn't see a pinhole related group besides "Zero Image Pinhole Camera Users" on this forum.
I checked just now again.
Am I missing something??
Could please direct me to this group? Or did you mean this forum we're posting/reading in right now?
And what is the difference between a Group and a Forum?

When I learned what APUG was, I am more than happy to support this site!
I'm in and will try to contribute. I am a novice, but it will be fun to discuss!

My "eternity" camera is coming together slowly: Saturday I got one of those big heavy paper cutters with a "chopping arm" to cut my mat material. I was using a paper cutter with a rolling blade and it was causing the paper cutter to wear out too fast: there is a soft plastic piece under the roller that wears out over time and it would have been used up by making so many mat cuts. I need it for cutting photo paper and trimming sheet film.

I'm also getting ahead of myself, but I ordered a Kodak 3A from the goodwill auction site that looks like it has a B&L rapid rectilinear lens. I've heard that a single element from that lens can cover 8x10 so I'm already heading in that direction. I love looking at my 5x7 negatives and can only imagine what an 8x10 would look like... plus it would be fun to try to contact print that size.

Yes, I was referring to this forum ((there was a url link here which no longer exists)). As to the difference between a forum and a group, that has always been a bit mysterious to me. I think it is mostly differences in the administration and the way the threads are integrated into the overall APUG structure in terms of new posts and notifications.

I note that some of the other groups which I belong to here (Canon FD, Folders, TLRs, Cyclists ...) see very infrequent postings. I can understand having relatively off topic 'groups' (such as cyclists) out of the main APUG new posts structure, but for something like pinhole activity, that's mainstream APUG as I see it.

I don't mean to detract from what you have put together, since you have a number of participants, it has apparently met a need. From my own perspective I have found the 'social networking' sites tend to have an awfully low signal to noise ratio. (Your experience may vary! )

Thanks. Yes, I did embedded systems programming for roughly twenty years before a "sudden retirement" in 2002 and hardly consider myself a Luddite. From Facebook I now know way more than I wanted to about some twenty-something relatives and i find F.B. even lower signal to noise than LinkedIn.

I agree with the beauty of archived threads preserving a lot of useful knowledge. As to your last line, that pretty well jibes with my thinking. With the galleries and the forums already here, it seems most things are covered without adding more. Additional sites strike me as solutions looking for a problem -- but I can be a bit on the curmudgeonly side! :confused:
