New Orleans

Hey all, I will be venturing down to New Orleans in the next couple of weeks. Ive been once before and I will be staying with a friend but if anyone is from there and would like to either give some tips or places to go
or
like to meet up and give me some insight please let me know!
Im hoping to shoot more portraits this trip but as always, I am looking for themes of solitude and nature entangled with society.

I will be wandering around French quarter one day but by no means wishing that to take up all my film.

any good cemetaries or historical locations
I aint got a car so keep that in mind and ill be in uptown/black pearl

Public transportation is great. Having a car can be a problem especially in the French Quarter, so use the trolleys and busses. We took trolleys to the Garden District and walked around for hours. There are many other interesting areas that never got to see.

Frenchman St for the music.
Stare at the mighty river, and be amazed at the thought of the amount of water that goes by every second.
Photograph doors and courtyards
Get a cup to go
Attend Sunday service at St. Augustine in the Treme
Catch a festival - there is something going on all the time
See music at Tipitina's

Oh, forgot you wanted to do some photgraphy...

Are you coming for Mardi Gras? If so prepared to be in a sea of humans, the French Quarter will be packed. Be prepared for the streetcars and buses to not be running at certain times.

Having said that:

Tips will have a ton of great music coming up.

I believe most cemeteries require you book a tour.

Tips will have a bunch of good bands coming up. Bring some high speed film.

Get a tiki drink from Latitude 29

Uptown has a bunch of nice homes with huge live oaks.

Crime has been pretty crazy down here and we are short on police. Be aware of your surroundings.

I am coming the morning of the 14th and living early on the 18th. I had come down last year and tried to get some medium format images while the parades were going on. I ended up having a few good ones come out but now im a little more comfortable with my flash so im excited about that.

im looking forward to Muses on Thursday.

Other than that night im thinking that Ill try to keep away from my bronica at the parades and stick to my small digital and just have fun. During the day is when ill focus more on my landscapes and hopefully stumble upon a portrait opportunity.

so far a couple spots im trying to photograph on my first day in the quarter would currently would be

Hotel Monteleone
The eagle saloon
the original building of L'Union
old absinthe house
Faulkner house
the place Tennessee Williams was stayin at
then probably make my way towards the river and capture the levee then back up towards Congo square

Im still trying to narrow down my thoughts into a theme that I can stick too rather than just a compilation of what I see. If I had more time and a car ideally I would drive up to death alley to capture that but I doubt ill have time.

Any more recs would be gratefully appreciated or and videos/literature you think I could utilize let me know!

Not useful to travel, but I amassed a good collection of historical maps and references I could share via google docs, The kind of things describing how Decatur was a dock unloading, trade post, and things generally found in these kinds of areas, like sexual activities...!
