Having posted three photos in the gallery, I think it's time I actually did some thread text posting .

#1) Polaroid 55PN, F/11 - 1 second, red filter

One of our summer enjoyments is gardening. My sweetheart likes to have lots of flowers around, so I do the garden bed prep and she fills them. When we bought our house 21 years ago we were financially challenged, so when my Dad asked if we'd like an old garden shed to keep yard tools in we accepted. The shed is now 37 years old, and showing its age, so we hide it with flowers. The Cattails, Hostas and rocks to the right of the shed hide a 100L cattle watering trough that we've dug into the ground. Each spring we put a couple of dozen "feeder" goldfish in the pond. By winter they've usually become sushi for the local raccoons, but we get to see them for most of the summer.

This old Polaroid 55pn is showing its age too. This photo should have been shot at 1/10'th second at F/11, but the film has slowed so much that I shot this at 1 second and the detail is still muddy. The film is three years old and not well stored.

#2) Polaroid 79 Colour Print, F/16 - 1/100'th second

While my sweetheart likes to plant flowers in the summer, I'm afraid that my gardening ambitions are a little more greedy . I love tomatoes ... I love to plant 'em, I love to grow 'em, I love the smell of green tomato plants and I especially love to eat 'em! The beds we grow our garden in are 4'x8' beds 16" tall. We mange to grow Termaters (that's like Mater but with the "Ter"), beans, beets, carrots, 'taters and garlic. This year the black squirrels have decided that they like beets and potatoes, so they've harvested all my beets and any 'taters that were close to the surface - 'lil divils!!

This was my first experiment with colour. I enjoyed Barbara Ann and Waynes photos so much that I went out and bought a pack of Polaroid 79 and ran a couple thru' the old Calumet 4x5. The pictures are a bit green I thought, but maybe that's just because there's so much green in the scene.

#3) Polaroid 79 Colour Print, F/16 - 1/100'th second

So, if you read this far, you'll know that I have a "thing" for Termaters . Here's a closeup of a fruit that I am going to savour in a few weeks, maybe between toast with some bacon, maybe on a hamburger, or maybe just chunked up on salad with some lemon chicken just off the BBQ - anyway I do it I'm sure it'll be a tasty treat

So far I'm enjoying this Polaroid 79 colour print film. I guess it's a bit of a lazy mans way of taking photos. There's no developing, no printing, but hey... it's summer right? and we're supposed to be recreating right? and it's still analog right? ... besides, there's 20 frames in a box, so I've got seventeen more to go

cheers all

Hi folks,

There's about two weeks left to post your photos and an accompanying story if you wish, so if you're holding off, now is the time to get into action!! We have a few entries, but it's all for fun, so the more the merrier.

The gallery is here : (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

But, if you aren't able to post to the gallery, you can post to this thread and if you need help, please email or PM to me and I'll be happy to try.

cheers all.

Hi John,

The slides came back Friday. Plan to get my scanning done Monday night and if "the one" comes out as I hope - will post soon.

I'm sticking with the original assignment (caption and all) and remember - deadline isn't until Aug. 31! :D

NOTE: I hope this works since I cannot get the pics onto the thread post!

CAPTION:

The Tools of Winter become the Toys of Summer - In a calculated collaberation, the Copake Town Highway Department prepared the "canvases" by applying the regulation orange paint. Then, the artists of Copake's Summer Youth Recreation Program engaged in some artistic license. Lookout for one of these colorful snow plows in your rear view mirrow come this winter!

------------------
I am totally confused why the shots are now being put into the thread rather than onto the dedicated Gallery!

This doesn't seem to be working for me.

The purpose here is to show our photography - now demonstrate our internet skills. Why do this kind of a mind screw on folk when we have a dedicated MSA Gallery?

George,

The reason for allowing photos to be posted either here in the thread or on the MSA gallery is that not everyone at APUG is a subscriber, and in order to post to the gallery (as far as I know) you have to be a subscriber. This way we can see your photos in the gallery (and they're great BTW!!) and if someone else doesn't have access to the gallery but wants to play along, we can see theirs too. It's a bit more inclusive.
I hope that answers your question. You can post in either place.

cheers eh?

John,

No problem - just got a bit frustrated trying to upload into the thread. I've now learned that the Gallery will take slightly larger sized files than a thread will!

I learned this because after I uploaded both pics to the Gallery - when I tried to upload them into the thread here - it wouldn't take the second one - gave me a "file size to big" notice.

As it was, I had the site open on two windows so I could try that copy image thing etc. Then I started re-sizing etc. several times and finally said "Uncle"!

Anyway, all's well that ends well - pics are in the MSA Gallery and links have been posted here. Sorry if my frustration got a bit obvious last night!

Just about everyone has a favorite ice cream shop they like to go to during the summer months. Here, it's the Yum Yum Tree. You can sit inside, outside (as we did), or, one can walk around the Mill Pond across the street. Inside are historic b&w photographs of the town which I've seen for 15-20 years and never tire of them. I've taken my daughter to this place for well over a decade,...and by the way, she's not smiling for the picture. She's smiling because I walked away from my cup of ice cream to take this photo. Don't worry. I clicked the shutter and rescued my chocolate moose-tracks just in time!

Hehehe  From the way she's leaning toward your ice cream, I'd say you had to make pretty fast tracks back to rescue your Moose Tracks :D

Great photo - I like the colours and the shadows.

Howdy to everyone!!!
My very first submission to the Monthly Shooting Assignment. So here I go . . .
(there was a url link here which no longer exists)
[I hope I did the link right!]
Since my body cannot tolerate the 110 + degree heat, here in Tempe/central Arizona, I usually, like a bear in the snowy winters of North America, I hibernate. And what better way, for me, at least, to hibernate than to re-discover me. Several of these books I had read many times over; however, each reveal fresh "nuggets" of me or of my writing. For instance, reading Julia Cameron's "The Artist's Way", got me discovering I can not only write, but also sketch, which in turn, to a degree, will aid me in my photography.

John, you're absolutely right! But I'm pretty quick to move when someone messes with my ice cream. I'm not always so quick upstairs, though. She usually doesn't like me to take her photo but this time she encouraged me. I never claimed to be the sharpest lens in the bag.

Thanks for the kind words.

Welcome to the MSA !!

Like you, I used to read a lot. As I've gotten older, "other things" gave taken up the time spent reading, but sometimes I can time for a book and still enjoy it.

Thank you for playing along with us MSA kids

Well folks,

I guess this is the end of the July and August Monthly Shooting Assignment. Thank you to all who posted photos and stories. I'm not sure which is more fun, looking at the photos (which is always great) or reading the stories. I've always like a narrative to accompany a photo because it gives (me at least) a bit more insight into the scene and lets me into the mind of the photographer a bit.

Wayne will be along sometime over the next few days to announce who the winning "victim" is that will be hosting the November/December MSA, so stay tuned. Many thanks to Wayne for stepping in to host this session and I hope we see you back posting new photos in the coming months Wayne!!

Barbara Ann will be announcing the September and October theme in a new thread that I will be starting soon and it sounds like a theme that while easy to photograph should be able to make us think and remember ... but I'll let her describe it in the next thread.

cheers and thanks all!!

Well it was a tough choice for me deciding a winner, what with the excellent stories that accompanied your images. I had to stew about it for a couple of days and see what drew my eye every time I came back to the gallery and looked at the entries. In the end, and to show that I think some merits should be awarded besides first place, I've picked a third, second and first place winner in the following order.

Third place goes to Ice Cream Hangout by FilmSprocket. Love the colors and the story as it reminds me so much of having ice cream on the benches with my sibilings where we were always interested in what the others had gotten to eat. Great shot. Second place goes to Barbara for Summer Nights. A unique shot and great story reminds me of the times I've spent on porch's sipping a drink in the cool evenings and thinking about life or chatting away and laughing with my friends. Really nice Barb. You were just a hair away from grabbing it again but I had to award First place to Straw Hat by Sly. The really strong graphic image drew my eye every time I came back to the gallery and even tho it didn't have a strong story, it is an image that pulls you in. I can feel the warmth of the sun in the shot, and it reminds me of sitting on docks out in lakes after a nice cool dip on a hot summers day as I dreamed within while looking off in the distance glassy eyed. Warm sun, teenage years and no cares; What a life. Add in the Infrared film and I think it's a winner in my book. Very very nice Sly. So thanks all for entering and I hope everyone enjoyed the entries as much as I did; I'm sure John will be enjoying his with some bacon on some toast with some.....

Well, once again great minds think alike! When I "disappeared" and you graciously chose the topic for July/August, you picked exactly what I would have. Now, you've gone and picked Straw Hat which is the one I had decided was the best! Are we on the same wavelength or what! Anyway, thanks for the nod to my Summer Nights. It is appreciated. Believe it or not, I almost didn't take the shot. I rarely have success with night photos but (thanks to the champagne) decided to take a chance. Hope you will be posting in the S/O assignment...
Best Regards,
barbara ann
