Yes, you can service the shutter speed ring yourself. It's been a while since I had one apart... Grit finds its way in there. When you take it apart, you must pay close attention as to the exact position of the ball bearing(s) that ride on a track. Make a written note to yourself. (And I think pay attention to the orientation of the speed ring itself) The ball bearing and its track and the speed ring all have to be put back in exactly the same place, or else you won't be able to move the shutter speed ring through all its positions when done.
