USMA 1982

Hello fellow OM users. Very happy to have found this site and in particular this group. I have had a couple of OMs sitting in camera bags on a shelf for too many years. One of them is my OM-1 that I bought new in 1977 and still works great. Took many hundreds of good pictures with that camera, though I never considered myself a serious photographer. But the last time I used it was probably more than 8 years ago. The second is an OM-2s that my mother gave to me about 15 years ago when she switched over to digital. The mirror had locked up and the winder wouldn't advance so it had been sitting unused all these years. Both standard 50mm lenses are f1.8. Also have an Olympus Zuiko 135mm f2.8 that I bought new in '80 or '81 and a TOU Five Star 80-200mm, f4.5 zoom that my dad gave my mom at some point, not sure how old that one is. Oh yes, also have a power winder that my mom gave me with the OM-2 and a couple of Vivitar flashes, one working and one dead. My DSLR, which I don't use nearly enough, is a Canon Rebel T1i with 18-55mm and 55-250mm zooms. I have to admit, most of my picture taking (as opposed to photography) is done with my iPhone.

About a month ago I was searching on E-bay for something entirely different, and the thought occurred to me someone might be still be interested in the two cameras, for parts if nothing else, and the lenses. So I started scrolling through the listings and lo and behold, the Olympus bug bit me all over again. Googled and found some good posts that pointed to new batteries and the reset procedure for the OM-2 which now seems to work fine. I then started looking around for user groups as it seemed there are still a fair number of folks practicing film photography. When I found APUG with the Olympus group, that was it. I've decided to hang on to my Olympus gear and get back into film. Since then I've acquired two new Olympus lenses, an 85-250mm, f5 off E-bay and a 35-70mm f3.5 from KEH, both in very nice condition. I think I should also have a 24 or 28mm wide angle for all of my basic needs ;-) I've ordered some Ilford Pan F plus 50 and Ektar 100 to get myself started. Now all I need is a good gear bag or backpack to stow everything!

I've enjoyed reading your posts in the Olympus group, as well as the wide range of subjects on the main APUG forums and I'm looking forward to posting some results soon!

All the best,

Welcome Ed. Glad you found your OM's still a pleasure to shoot. My intro was about the same time. 1st OM-1n in 78 followed by a OM-2n about 5 years later. Restarted shooting film again, though not as much as I should.

Uncle Bill

Welcome to the group Ed, I've been shooting with OM bodies since about 2008 or so. Currently got three OM-1s, three OM2n (one is jammed the other is down at John Hermannson) and an OM-4. All great bodies.

Even 'pentaxpete' has Olympus now as I have 'taken over'my Boy's OM2n that he was given by a Widow Lady some years ago but now like all youngsters he uses his 'Gadgets' to take photos and put them onto Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat etc etc == I have been out using some free Minolta gear lately but now thinking about loadiong up the OM2n again !

Welcome Ed to the group. Evidently we all are "old guys" because we bought our first OM cameras at seventies. Correct if I am wrong. I also bought my first OM-1 in 1977, then OM-2 in 1978, OM-4Ti in 1988. I have inherited three OM-1n, one OM-1, one OM-2s, one OM-40 so now I have some OM cameras.
I recommend H.Zuiko 2.8/24 mm lens rather than 2.8/28 mm Zuiko. I consider it is a very suitable lens. Also if you can find Zuiko 2/40 mm, buy it.

hi Ed! Welcome to the group and the site! Really this group does not get much traffic.. Feel free to just post in the 35mm forum.

As said above, the 24mm f2.8 has a good reputation, but I dont think Olympus made a bad wide-angle. So whatever you choose will be good!

Thanks for the welcome notes. I did end up getting a 28mm f2.8 that I found on eBay for a pretty good price. I haven't had a chance to do any shooting yet because of work, bad weather, etc., but I'm hoping to get out over the next 2 weeks and see what these OM's can still do
