I've just looked at the site of a new camera manufacturer, unfortunately a heavy handed moderator deleted an earlier post. ObscuraCamera

This was to be my reply to JStraw who asked the manufacturer if he's an APUG sponsor:

"So what does it matter if Didier Chatellard is an APUG sponsor or not. He's merely introducing a new product to us all, and unless he posts this information we'd have absolutely no idea of his products, he is a very small manufacturer. Perhaps if we make him welcome he might in future become an advertiser or sponsor.

It should be remembered that plenty of other people constantly plug their commercial websites in ordinary APUG posts in the forums one even using the gallery and no one tells them they should be sponsors. Two spring instantly to mind but this is not a naming and shaming post."

So there are a few double standards here.

You all out of line- and most likely so am I. In the first case, if somebody has a problem with a post, it needs to be reported, instead of addressing comments on the thread, as some sort of quasi APUG police officer, so in that sense I agree with Ian. A moderator has the best chance of converting a driveby, such as occured, into a sponsor.

In the second case, the complaint about the moderator and the first poster should be adressed in a similar fashion, rather than this playground stuff.

I will report a post if I think it is spam, for example we had a guy who at every opportunity would mention his publication. That is spamming. In fact there are still people on APUG who do that. Someone coming to this site and making a single post, about their new to the traditional photography marketplace product, is not IMO spam.

If someone is a longtime subscriber, we usually give them leeway to post the occasional commercial announcement, and we give more leeway to sponsors, but generally encourage them to limit commercial announcements to the Sponsors' Forum.

Commercial announcements from first-time posters are usually deleted.

As far as the response goes--if you object to a post as commercial or off topic, please report the post. Do not respond in the thread, or we get threads about threads like this one, which are closed or deleted as a matter of course.
