new ir filter...

will be getting my new infrared filter tomorrow...rm72 if 52mm. it is a hoya, anyone ever use this before? what experience have you had. i go on vacation next week and plan on taking a few 4x5 infrareds. i also have own enlarger now and slowly building on a d-room. here soon look forward to devloping my own negs and prints!!! no more labs...unles it happens to be slides...sacrifices. anyway, know its first post in awhile, so figured i' wait and have at least something worth writing about. that's about it for now, gotta go!!! night ya'll!!

The filter is quite standard. What film will you be using?

This is the standard IR filter. It's basically opaque, so it's mostly useful on rangefinders and TLR's. With a tripod-mounted SLR or LF, focus first and then attach. I've used it with nice results but I haven't shot any IR in nearly two years now.

It's an expensive filter. I have a 58mm that fits most of my smaller lenses. I've had the 77mm Hoya in my wish list at B&H for a long time but can't justify over $200 for the use I would get from it.

Just the standard caution here: Don't take any irreplaceable pictures using tools with which you have no experience. If these will be your first IR pictures, shoot the scenes on regular film as well. Learning a new tool on vacation is rarely a good experience unless you plan to develop the film in the hotel bathroom...you can easily come home with nothing to show for all of your efforts. Remember that you'll have focus shift issues with IR...if you don't know how to adjust your focus then you're in danger of coming home with a lot of out-of-focus images. (I only use IR in 35mm, so I can't help you with focus shift on 4x5. I do know that the amount of shift will vary depending on your lens, and that you'll eventually have to work it out for each lens you use.) Closing down your aperture a lot might help get your images in focus, but then you'll face diffraction problems.

No personal insult intended here...I just think that learning new tools should be done in a "friendlier" environment, and hate to think of someone spending significant time and effort shooting on vacation with unknown tools only to find out that they got nothing for their efforts when they return home.

got my filter today and also would like to take this time to say i am not exactly going anywhere (long distance-wise) for my vacation. i will more than likely go to my normal shooting area, mt rainier-which is about an hr away from me. i normally take about 4 shots overall with my 4x5 camera, i also take along my 35mm F2 camera, for my average roll film shots. as far as learning something new,esp with this format....i tend to take my ever-so sweet time. its not only about the film, so much as it is about how much it cost to go there....hahaha. gas,food and film....all figure...about 30-40 bucks. my f2 has a somewhat new,but so very much used 300mm,135mm and a 50mm lens her meter gets no reading from the batts., but i have my light meter i use for my 4x5 and its pretty darn accurate!! but it's late...or early...(you decide...2:30 in the am). i gotta get some sleep, later!

Glad to hear that the vacation is so close to home. I just hate to see people not get any shots on a long-distance vacation when they try out new equipment...but it sounds like you could drive up to Rainier almost any time. I'd love to see the shots you get, especially if you try out the IR filter.

Whoa! a fellow 'T-Town' resident! If you want to split the gas and have a little company, my son and I also shoot 4x5 and 35mm. We enjoy Mt. Rainier as well. My car doesn't do snow covered roads well but I can pay for half of the gas out to the mountain and back. I shoot on weekend days when I'm not over at BarryYoung's house working on my new 8x10. Let me know what you think.

sounds great!! i am available sunday through the following sunday. i will be going monday or tuesday anyway. i am currently planning out a shot of the entrance to the park at a converging angle as an experiment...more so as a
learning tool. but i'd like that...sounds great. i have been trying to locate a few fellow lf users. i am still new to this and always appreciate new views and approaches. i am also working building my own darkroom, recently bought an Omega 4x5 condenser enlarger with a bunch of acessories, so i look forward to working with that as well!!! but have to go, gotta go to work.
