New guy here

Hi all,

Just joined up and recently got my dads photo gear handed down to me. I got a Nikon F100 and an F5. I got a bulk loader with tmax 400 and after my first few rolls developed at home I am hooked. It was my first ones so still getting the hang of things. I followed the recommendations on Kodaks site and was looking for any suggestions on development times and chemicals that work best with this film. Currently shooting with DX coded cassettes of ISO 400. I was also looking at the Ilford films that dad told me he used but could not buy locally anymore so switched to Kodak but really likes Ilford. I have been using the Tmax and D-76 developers and the rapid fixer. Any advice would be appreciated.

Sounds like you are very lucky to have a great set of gear, equipment & materials already.
I'd stick with what you've got until you can produce pictures you are satisfied with.
Trying out different films and developers is a stage that nearly all photographers go through - Try to resist it as long as possible!

T-Max 400 is very well suited to either T-Max or D76 developers. Pick one and practice with it would be my advice.

Oh, and keep your eyes open for an enlarger and other printing gear.

I've always used Kodak film so I can't comment on Ilford.
But with 43,000 Plus APUG'ers you will soon have some great information !
Also tell us where you live so that you can receive some relevant advise.
So what's equipment is your Dad using now ?
I gave all my camera equipment to my Son, a few years ago when I thought Digital Was How To Roll.
I came to my sense last year, and took my equipment back !

Hello Lucas and welcome to APUG. Nice cameras, your one lucky fellow.

Kodak, Ilford, both make quality B&W. My first preference is Kodak because that is what I grew up with, quality is always first class, and its widely available. Use Ilford later in life, what the local camera store was pushing, works fine. What ever floats your boat.

Welcome! You can't go wrong with Tmax and D-76. Once you figure out exactly what you can expect from it, try some HP5+ or Delta 100. Both also work great in D-76. I've been enjoying film for over 40 years, so you've got a lot to look forward to...

Thanks for the warm welcome. I do own a digital Nikon D90 but My dad always used film even during the digital craze, I gave in. Look forward to a long satisfying hobby with film. Ron my dad is mostly shooting medium format now he has some Mamiya cameras and a ton of real old cameras, not sure of the models as I wasnt allowed near them growing up. I beleive he has a Hassalbad as well.
