New Fujifilm GF670W

Wow, I am just totally and completely blown away by the results from my new Fujifilm GF670W. My jaw was scrapping the floor as I began to review the images from my first set of film. Whatever reservations I had about such a huge purchase have flow out the window. This baby's a keeper!

Congratulations! I have the standard focal length GF670 but my feelings are similar. These are wonderful cameras capable of capturing excellent images. Your location shows as Shanghai but the photos appear to be taken in Japan. Did you get the camera here in Japan?

Yes, all these images were taken in Japan, but I live in Shanghai. I was in Tokyo for a holiday and did not expect to buy this camera. However, I found it priced $800 USD cheaper than in China so I had to buy it. No way around that! Sadly, I bought the camera only in the final days of my holiday in Japan. Still, I managed to pound 10 rolls of film through it! I just wish I bought it at the beginning of my trip.

I went to Fujifilm's corporate headquarters in Tokyo, where they have both the GF670W and GF670 on display. I played with both of them there and finally settled on the W version. The folder seems just a bit weirder to hold, with the bellows and lid an all. Still, I am so dang happy with the W version that I can see myself getting the folder in the future, just to have a new focal length with this type of quality.

RattyMouse, which store did you get the camera from? I'm even contemplating about selling my Mamiya 7II kit to fund one of these... It would be a perfect complement to my GS645 when traveling.

My non-wide regular GF670 sure is. I had to purchase a B+W soft filter to do photos of my 86-year-old mom, just to tone it down. The pictures came out wonderful. Can't recall ever needing to do that with any other camera.

Lovely images!

I own the non-wide version and yup, the lens is really that sharp. It completely amazes me that Fuji spent the time and money to make these cameras in this day and age and then promptly gave no support or marketing of any kind. Combined with slide film, these two cameras could have been marketed to people who want the ultimate in image quality.

Oh well.

I used Provia 100F for my mom. The pictures were done indoors using an on-camera flash with a 3D diffuser and the soft filter. The higher contrast of the transparency film dove-tailed nicely with the lower contrast of the straight-on diffused light and filtration to produce very nice modeling.

Given the less-than-ideal handheld snapshot setup (in her case the only way now), the overall result was very pleasing to me. Even my better half, not normally impressed with my efforts, did a double-take when looking down at the 6x6 frames on the light table.

I'd be crushed if Fujifilm drops all E-6 and Ferrania backtracks for any reason. I've just never warmed to C-41.

These are amazing cameras. And although it's true that the camera doesn't make the picture, it's also true that better tools make it more likely to realize those pictures.

I bought my GF670W from Yobodashi in the Shinjuku part of Tokyo. The price was incredibly low, something like $2150.00. I got an extra 5% off for using a Chinese Union Pay bank card. I'm not sure why they offer a discount like that, except to try to attract more Chinese customers (i'm not Chinese, I just live there).

Here in Shanghai, I would have to pay around $2800 for a GF670W that was 100% gray market and perhaps used, not new.

Hi Ratty, I remember you from some other forums. I nearly bought the wide angle adapter for the X100, partly due to some great shots ISTR you posting with it but its bizarre indeed that at a similar time Fujifilm would produce a camera like this and yet do more or less nothing to try and sell the thing. The black version from Voigtlander seems to be identical. I have the 28 Elmarit APSH more or less glued onto my M6 recently, this new beauty sounds expensive but its only twice the price of a private sale on the little Leica lens alone. Sort of puts it all into perspective really.

I have a couple of questions:
1) How are you finding it in the hand? It looks fantastically well designed so I guess should be really nice to hold
2) How are you finding the metering?

You SHOULD buy the wide angle adapter if you have an X100. It is wonderful.

Regarding the GF670W. It is BEAUTIFUL to hold as well as look at. It is a truly excellent camera to operate.
I find the meter perfect in almost every way. Slide shots I have taken come out well exposed for the most part. Some of my night shots seem under exposed. I'm not sure if that is my fault or the cameras. I've only shot a few rolls so far at that light level.

Thanks Ratty, I have noted that its only 1 Kg all up so no heavier than an M system body with one of the mid weight lenses. I know that sooner or later GAS will get the better of me and I will head over to Robert Whites to try out the black Voigtlander version of this camera. I read elsewhere on a Leica forum that the viewfinder is fantastic, I wear glasses so 28mm on an M is a huge compromise for me.

I decided btw to go all in on film recently, I can do everything I want with it apart from one or two small niches I was exploring that require a very digital look (as in much more digital looking than Fuji X).

I wear glasses too and find the viewfinder really nice to look through. There are threads for a diopter which I might try to shed my glasses while shooting. No matter what, no glasss are always better.

The GF670W is VERY expensive in the US and elsewhere. I see prices at $3000 new. Ouch. If at all possible, take a trip to Japan! Or find someone who goes there on occasion. I paid $2200 for my GF670W and it was brand new. I dont think I could have pulled the trigger at $3000.
