Hi there, newly interested in film photography (again
I learned photography in highschool on a K1000, then was given a 110 Ektralite later in highscool, then once graduated bought a Pentax PZ-1 and eventually somehow ended up with one of the 600 series Polaroid cameras.
As 2000 rolled around I got really interested in the new fangled digital photography which was coming down the pipe, and around 2002 I purchased a Canon G3 and basically never used my Pentax SLR again.
Fast forward to a year or so ago and while digging around looking for my old Canon G3 I came across my other old cameras, and thought that trying out that Polaroid would be great fun. That's when I found out the film had been discontinued, so I spent too much money on ebay for expired (2006/2007) film, of which about 10% somewhat turned out. Around the same time I ran some Kodak gold which had probably expired 5-7 yrs prior that I found in my camera bag through the Pentax.
Then this spring my mother came home from a trip to the east coast with a Kodak Hawkeye flash outfit, a 1920s box camera, Yashica LM, and an Ansco Cadet II which belonged to my deceased grand parents (was able to recover some decades old photos from exposed film in the box with it).
Anyway, I found all of this to be great fun, and GAS started to set in, so now I'm sitting here waiting a Polaroid Land 250, Bilora Bella 44 127 film camera, and a Nikon F100 (I have a Nikon D80 an D300 and felt for 35mm a body compatible with the same lenses made a lot more sense than trying to duplicate the focal lengths with my Pentax).
Anyway, it's been a bit of a rollercoaster, from checking out old cool cameras with expired film, to trying to take good photos with new film and being a bit disappointed and remembering that more skill is needed with film, to now appreciating the more considered pace required.
I won't be giving up digital, I can't imagine trying to use film for the indoor sports photography that I do, and I would continue to use digital for important events, but in the future I can see bringing the F100 or Yashica along to get images with a different look, and I do find walking around with a film camera to be a relaxing pursuit.
