By flipping over the legs completely and pulling the center collumn through one gets even a more compact collapsed state.

And one of the three legs can be turned into a monopod it seems.

But don't you think your Linhof will last yet another 40 years?

Q.G.,

I see your point.
There is no arguing with that fact.
The year is almost over, I was thinking something shiny that Camille
can buy for me, to help me celebrate the year end festivities.

Maybe, I should put Cigars on the WishList instead ...

Probably last longer than a Chinese tripod!

Yes.
Hard to tell, that.

I have seen some truly terrifying reviews of nice looking Chinese products, ball heads being among them.
In one review, a ball head was actually taken apart, and though nice and shiny on the outside, the inside looked very similar to what we see in pictures of the decaying Russian fleet.

But that does by no means mean that everything made in China is bad. Not at all, in fact!
But how do we tell in advance...?

Look at Feisol tripods. they are Chinese and VERY well made. Price point wise, and build quality wise, they rank up there with the best over priced carbon tripods out there. Contact Kerry Thalmann on this forum, he is a sponsor.

Why risk your camera, lens, film, and your time with a cheap China import.

Almost everything made there is crap. Companies that import goods from China want to get your business with imitations that look like bargains and make higher profits. I am not against higher profits if the true value is revealed. Gosh, dog food, medicine, children toys, drywall, the list goes on!

Buyer beware!

Sorry for the rant.

Funny, this doesn't seem to apply to my Made in China Nikon 50/1.8 AF-D lens.

True in the past ... but the sweeping generality seems to be out of date.

I have a couple of articles - shoes and clothing for examples - that are equal to, or superior to, anything else, from anywhere

Like the Japanese, I think they have - and are - LEARNING!

Nobody commented. Are these so common features?

It depends....

It all depends. A lot of the crap is actually spec by foreign companies that want items at a low per unit cost. FYI, the hottest electronic doo dad the Apple Iphone and Ipods are manufactured in China. Apple wouldn't use factories there if they churned out only crap. China is in the same spot a as Japan a few decades ago. Now Japanese manufacturing is synonymous with quality. China will have that reputation soon. Maybe kick the tires on the tripods before making a final decision on the quality.

So the problems with Apple's i-products are because Apple actually wanted these products to be like that?
