I decided to play experiment a bit with ChartThrob. My understanding is that the correction curve that one creates should be applied to the positive image before inverting for printing your digital negative. Is this correct? It seems to me that it should work this way but I don't see this specifically stated in the Chart Throb directions.

You got it right, the correction curve should be applied to the positive image. After that you can flip it and invert it.
