Think Robert gets this from feedback and from the main page - "APUG.ORG is an international community of like minded individuals devoted to traditional (non-digital) photographic processes." ...would say it's his "perception" as much as his "opinion"

I said that was the general consensus, that's all; I made no statement as to whether it is a good one or not. FWIW, If you had bothered to check you would find out that I shoot film, scan the transparencies and print on Fuji Crystal Archive.

Please, let's not turn this into a D v. A thread.

Anyone actually seen Chris Jordan's NOLA book, or a show of the work yet? Aside from questions of process, is it interesting?

BTW I note that all the proceeds from Chris's book are going to Katrina relief

I agree Jim. I've been saying that here for a long time. I do know a lab that prints Ciba on a Lambda, BTW.

especially as every photobook (this is the books/magazines sub-froum right?) is a D/A analogue... ;-)

so to post an image (color or bw), it needs to be a scan of a print that was a result of a non-digital output, and the capture method was also non-digital).. so i'd need to have printed the color image from film, and onto photographic paper by either an enlarger or contact.... start to finish, completely analog... with the only digital part being the scan of the print to get it on the web

sorry.. that wasn't my intent.. was just trying to figure out the caveats for posting an image in my personal gallery, and found that i need to make sure my color images are also analog output (non-scanned)

Jim, not quite. It is acceptable to scan a negative or transparency directly. Scans of ink jet prints, Light Jet prints, etc, are frowned upon.

Sorry, for the sidetrip here.

I would love to see a book by Sam Portera, I know I would purchase one. There is just something about his images that I've never seen elsewhere - it is something that can only come from someone who has lived through this terrible ordeal. His images have a feeling that Chris Jordan can't match.

There you can see his Katrina work. I don't see how this turned into such an argument- one person is posting a link to a new book by Chris Jordan, and suddenly people are arguing about the merits of his work, his output, etc... I don't think the author of this thread ever said that he preferred Jordan's work to Portera's. And like Mr. Goldfarb said- they both have their own purposes and are very different from one another.

have to agree here... the two bodies are different, bring out a different feeling.. at least in my opinion, i'd buy a book from either photographer.

Just a word about "proceeds going to Katrina relief"

Ive seen this a lot and where this relief is going none of us know. Ive seen church groups gutting homes, or handing out water and meals. This is the only relief Ive seen. The red cross brought in food and water but they are gone now or atleast I don't see them driving through the neighborhoods.

Im not sure how any one can help. Many have donated money to organizations and I can't say where that went. My little girls got a stuffed animal at Christmas, Fema gave us a little money right after storm and delivered my FEMA trailer 8 months later. Thats it.

Unless an orginazation is specified and can be contacted, it means nothing.

Keep the faith Sam. As I have said before, if there is a way to raise the $, you are welcome to put it out under my imprint... ANYTIME. If I had the money to do it alone, I wouldn't think twice. The work is beautiful. I think I mentioned before that someone would get one out there fast. That was to be expected. Your story is different and shouldn't be compared.
