Film strips typically cut into 5 or 6-frames for negative storage sleeves are easy to place in the holder and advance manually to the negative you want. For rolls of film and strips, there is a Beseler Negatrans device that enables you to advance the frames through the holder without touching the film:

For shorter strips (say 3-4 negatives), you just have to wrestle with the strip to get the negative you want properly placed in the holder.
On contrast filters above or below the lens, some claim above the lens is better, others claim there's no difference:
