Mirko - Any details on th Super 8 film or do we need to wait to the 18th (when Photokina starts)?

Thanks for starting this thread, Andy.

I can wait until the 18th, if Mirko can't spill the beans early, but what I'm intrested in is whether the Super 8 reversal film is B&W or color, what ISO, whether it is daylight or tungsten balanced, and what notch code is used on the cartridges. I'd also like to know if it will be available in DS8 spools or in bulk for respooling onto DS8 camera spools.

PAN-X-Reverso is a black and white reversal material which is extremely sharp and has a wonderful modulation.
It does not block in the highlights and has plenty of reserve in the blacks.

This film is our replacement for the discontinued Plus-X reversal film from Kodak.
We manufacture it in house in a new Super8 cartridge (not from Kodak).
The cartridges are marked for 100 ASA.
You need to shoot it as a tungsten film (as with any B/W material: without filter).
We tried a few labs and they got it right at the first shot.

The film will be available at PHOTOKINA 2012.

Heck, as cheap as used 8mm gear is this would almost tempt me to buy a camera and projector to play around with (is this a standard black and white reversal process you can do at home easily enough?)

I almost forgott: We will be introducing a simple to use B/W reversal Kit as well to go with the film.
We tried to get this done for Photokina but more than a sample and leaflet will not be there next week.

I use the Kodak formulas for D-94 first developer, R-9 potassium dichromate bleach, and either D-95 or Dektol for second developer. Will this work for PAN-X-Reverso? What about D-94A with R-10 potassium permanganate bleach?

Dominik,

there are still plenty companies out making 16mm film at very, very tightly calculated prices.
This business area is not in our scope as we will be unable to compete with them.
We see the lack of products mainly in Super8 as there is actually a fear that Super8 will vanish totally depending on how things go at Kodak.
So for now we are very happy to have a Super8 product out.

Mirko there are currently more films for Super 8 than for any other format. Every colornegative shooting stock for 35mm is available in Super8, even APX has speen respooled, Fuji reversal films as well as Fomapan 100R are available in Super8

Mirko, what about supplying development tanks for Super8 as well? I don't want to risk any money with these russian lomo tanks so a German distributor or a better, reliable source would be great. I don't feel like building my own development tank but would really like to develop Super8 myself as well. Just a suggestion

Some new developing tanks would be nice, but the market would be really small, I would think. A way to develop in a Jobo or similar processor might be easier to design, although I tried that years ago and couldn't home-engineer a solution.

But the UPB-1A Lomo tank works fine, if you get one in good condition. They are a bit tedious to load. There are smaller tanks that won't hold 50 feet of film.

Well, that's the problem. I don't want to spend a load of money on some uncertain ex-east-block seller and then end up paying a of import taxes here in Austria as well as a hefty sum for our postal system to collect the taxes upon delivery etc. only to discover I bought a useless brick. No sir, I'd rather prefer buying from a reputable company with warranty, returns guarantee etc. I'd even pay more for it, no questions asked, but I don't wanna play russian roulette

I prefer a solution I can use inside a changing bag as I have to make my darkroom lighttight every time I use it and it's only 99,8% light tight. No problem for b&w positive development but far too risky for everything else. Also too bulky - I'm running out of storage space already

Or even good old Regular 8. Looks like Kodak will no longer perforate 16mm film to make regular 8.

John Schwind sells regular 8mm film that is reperfed 16mm film. I don't know if he does the reperfing himself or if he has it done for him.

Regular 8mm film is 16mm wide on the camera spool, and is only slit after processing. It uses the same perfs as 16mm film, but twice as many of them. In order for this new film to be available in regular 8, it would need to be supplied in 16mm, either as single or (preferably) double perf film, and then the additional perfs would have to be added in between the existing ones.

DS8 is also 16mm wide, but it uses Super 8 perfs, which are smaller and more square than 16mm perfs. You cannot reperf a single or double perfed 16mm film to make it. You'd need 16mm unperfed, or have it perfed for DS8 by the manufacturer.

I don't know about the new ADOX perforator, but perhaps it's not that difficult to make 16mm wide strips with super-8 perforations.

Aside that, they can sell the super-8 film in bulk cans too, for recharging cartridges of for use in single-8 cameras. I'm a single-8 user, as many friends of mine, so this option should be really great.

I thought the following was common knowledge among Regular-8 users. I'll pass it along again (quote from John):

Kodak no longer supplies TRI-X [regular-8]. I have to limit my TRI-X sales to 4 25ft
spools because of low supplies. I was caught by surprise and Kodak is
not allowing any further sales of this product. I have been trying to
get one last large order but Kodak no longer is customer friendly. I
would appreciate your calling Kodak and letting them know that use R8
and R8 tri-X and you believe they should allow one more large order, The
number is 800 621 3456. You will get the order desk. Ask to speak with
the planner for this product. Let them know in a polite way you are very
upset. Remember the person you speak to has no power to make a decision
but may relay the info to someone who can. Let me know what happens.
