Hi All,

We're beta testing a new member badge today for those who support Photrio by not blocking our ads. The user avatar area will show the badge under your avatar as seen below:

Screen Shot 2018-10-05 at 12.36.30 PM.png

If you whitelist Photrio.com from your adblock or turn off any browser ad blocking settings for photrio.com the badge should show.

About our 3rd party ads:

Our 3rd party display ads are only from google adsense and ebay.com. I have tried to have only reputable ad networks display here. Also, we do not have pop-up ads, pop-under ads, or nagging 'click here to continue' style ads. The ads generally exist in the outer perimeter of the pages (header, sidebar, footer).

Many are finding the ebay ads interesting as they show targeted used camera gear and darkroom supplies & change daily. For example:

Screen Shot 2018-10-05 at 12.51.12 PM.png

The ads generate revenue simply from showing on the site. Having ads enabled on Photrio can go a long way to keeping us funded.

Some may be blocking ads and not even know it. Here is a link that explains how to whitelist a specific website from adblocking:

This is computerworld, but the same applies to us: https://www.computerworld.com/adblock/

If you still have trouble whitelisting Photrio feel free to contact me for assistance or ask others here.

(*note: once allowing ads it may take a few page refreshes for your badge to appear)

I know many are extremely hostile to ads and will refuse to enable them. Some block ads but subscribe instead, which is greatly appreciated. The vast majority block ads and also do not subscribe. We're doing everything we can to fund the site, so I think the badge is a nice way to recognize those who go the extra mile.

Thanks,
Sean

P.S. The badge is only activated from here on out. Your old posts will all update to the badge once you have re-accessed Photrio with ads enabled. The detector may not be perfect, as mentioned if you have difficulty getting the badge to show please contact me.

Just bumping this thread as I had to remove it temporarily. The badge seems to be working ok now.

For many years I have bought items from Amazon by going through the APUG Photrio URL. That way every purchase sends some money to APUG Photrio. I will continue to support APUG Photrio by making searches and purchases through APUG Photrio.

I don't block any ads - I see plenty of them on Photrio at the top, bottom, and in the middle of pages. However, even after logging out and back in, I don't have the "Ads Enabled" tag.

Hi Theo, do you see ebay ads at the bottom of this page? Just checking. Also, if you do see the ebay ads what browser are you using? If using Safari then try this:

Make sure "Enable content blockers" is un-checked

Thanks,

it looks ok now. It's not perfect, so if you were to access at work and they block scripts it might revert to removing it, but once on your home browser that isn't blocking it would re-activate.

Sean, the Ebay adverts are interesting but unfortunately they show the US portal of Ebay, it would be more useful if they showed the members regional portal. I don't know if that's possible.

I'm hoping they add a global option soon. I'll try building out some for the UK tomorrow.

I don't mind ads so much - but I hate the tracking that goes with them. And as computing power and the ability to "connect the dots" across many tracking services increases, it will get even worse. Perhaps benign given the ads we see here. I don't mind seeing the ebay ads at the bottom of a photrio page, but I hate seeing an ad for something I looked at on one site show up on another (as is often the case with other websites).

I never knew that!... and I am quite a big purchaser on Amazon = if I can't find it anywhere cheaper, as I like to spread the cash to the smaller guys where possible.

So for future purchases on Amazon, do I just open Photrio, click an Amazon link and buy through that = is that the way one does it?

Those tags look pretty terrible on the mobile version. That tag area is just too croweded with Member/Subscriber and this one underneath. It would be a bit better side by side, but not exactly great. It is a little less disturbing on a normal browser.

Looking at a mobile page the tags are a high contrast item, thats perhaps why the disharmony is so noticable. I noticed them right away.

I do routinely block ads but the system says I have ads enabled which is not the case. However, I know the site has costs so I subscribe. I do actually hate ads but that isn't really the reason I block them. I am often on the move using my mobile phone to provide a data connection to my laptop and that data is limited so anything to reduce data usage is de rigueur.

Well these Ebay adverts are from ebay.co.uk

View attachment 208997

But some appearing at the bottom of the page aren't. So it seems it can be done easily.

Ian
Those are google based ebay ads and not the native ones. I've been in contact with ebay to see if we can get their native ads to be global.

I don't really have an active amazon affiliate link anywhere but can set that up soon.

I have a fix for this in the works.

I support apug because it's a valuable resource. I don't mind the locally generated ads by apug sponsors, such as Zacks, etc. In fact, I patronize them when I can. They're all part of the community.

Google is a whole 'nother ballgame. I make a large effort to make it as difficult as possible for google to track me and create an accurate profile. Only Facebook is more aggressive at profiling you and I avoid that altogether. Google is harder to avoid and while the ads themselves aren't a problem for me, the tracking and profile building is a deal breaker. Sorry. I can't help you on this one.
