Dear photrio members, we have exciting news for you:

New ADOX Polywarmtone Emulsion available

The ADOX team is thrilled to announce a completely new silver gelatin product for the analog printing market: the Polywarmtone® emulsion!

Originally a legendary paper from Forte, its recipe would have been lost in the digital revolution, if not for ADOX saving the production technology. It took the company ten years to recreate the naturally warm, beige-green, high-definition, extremely vintage-looking emulsion - and now it is available for artistic work on a variety of surfaces. And it has a superb toning response, too!

Because of the COVID-related travel restrictions, for the entire year 2020 the Adox team could not reach the Swiss factory to continue coatings. The emulsion production in Berlin, however, was going on. With borders still being closed, the Polywarmtone Emulsion (PWE) is being released to the market before the actual paper. All the quality standards and characteristics of the Polywarmtone paper are also, naturally, applying to the emulsion. Sharp, rich, warm-tone images look beautiful on self-coated papers and various textiles. This emulsion can be coated onto other materials too: stones, wood, glass…. The ADOX team is looking forward to see many types of original artwork by creative printers and darkroom experimenters.

Technical info:
The fixed contrast 2,5 was chosen as a perfect balance for most negatives. It slightly varies from 2,5 to 3, depending on the coating thickness. One 300 ml bottle coats 2.5-3 sqm.

Accessories:
ADOX is also releasing an emulsion hardener EMH-1, which can be used as a standalone bath or preferably added to the stop bath. ADOX Colloida C is a special coating gelatin, which is used for better adherence and emulsion spread over alternative surfaces.

I made my own emulsion and coated paper. I will be waiting for the finished product. I didn't have access to nice baryta paper. Everyone who has space and resources should try coating paper. Makes one appreciate what goes into a box of paper

honestly learn to make your own emulsions. Nick Brandreth at the George Eastman Museum will be doing a 3 hour online workshop on how to make your own AZO paper. check their website. Buy the books by Denise Ross and get going.
I certainly commend Adox but 45 euro plus tax/shipping gets it to about $60 US.
I make my own POP paper for virtually pennies and can coat about 20 sheets with 500ml of solution.
I would prefer to spend my time making photographs vs. making the paper then the photographs but the materials are not available anymore and I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for any to return. plus you have a definite handle on something that is uniquely yours!

I think they have addressed the lithiness elsewhere, in the affirmative.

There is no scientific definition for lith capability / lith response. And no manufacturer has ever specifically classified or advertized one of his products as lith capable. For very good reasons.
No one really knows why one emulsion/photopaper show a stronger response in lith development than an other one.
With a liquid emulsion it could also be possible that the response is dependent on the surface which is used.

A liquid emulsion like our new Polywarmtone emulsion is perfect for photographers who like to experiment and who like to try new things. And if someone is interested in experimenting with lith development on different surfaces, why not.

But you shouldn't forget that the situation has changed really a lot in these 12 years. At that time ADOX was just in the very first beginning, the very first small steps in R&D to try to reformulate the Polywarmtone.
Lots of the raw materials used in the original Forte Polywarmtone are gone now, not available anymore. AFAIK in these 12 years they had almost finished the R&D process three times (the paper was just short before introduction), but then unfortunately the raw material situation changed again, some other ingredients were not available anymore and the R&D process had to be started again. That is the main reason why this project has been going on for so long. In a former posting some time ago Mirko said that more than 120 different substances are in the new ADOX Polywarmtone emulsion. So you can imagine how complex and difficult the development of such an emulsion is.
When Ilford introduced their new Multigrade V paper they also explained that it has been a 10 years effort to develop this new paper.
From all my factory visits and numerous talks to the chemists and engineers I can only say how extremely difficult and challenging their work is. And that I've always been very impressed and fascinated of the work of these "technology wizards".

At this point, I'll rejoice for the introduction of any new photo papers--hard stop. My post was a reminder that a lithable silver chloride paper was the raison d'etre of the new PW. It would be a shame if that goal isn't realized after over a decade of development.

O.k., then your expectations are quite different from mine. I would be already happy about a further high-qualitity alternative to Foma and Ilford warmtone papers. A paper with a different look, a different warm-tone. Even if it would not lith at all, but generally being an excellent paper, would be satisfying for me considering the fact how difficult it is to make a new emulsion.

I do not think lithability was/is a requirement for ADOX in wanting to recreate Polywarmton. It would be nice if it did, though. And it would, no doubt, add to its popularity.
