Potassium Cyanide, however, is readily replaced by (slower working but much safer) sodium thiosulfate. The various additives to the salts that go in collodion seem like limiters -- I've seen formulae that include cadmium, for instance. Nitrates in general may become hard to source (along with nitric acid to make them), but you can always start from potassium nitrate which you can make yourself.

I don't think "decline" is the right word -- worker health restrictions are causing more trouble that loss of industrial capability in general. Both Fuji and Adox have had recent product changes because necessary chemicals became either unobtainable, illegal to distribute, or illegal to import into a major market (even in a finished product). Seems to me I've read of Kodak having similar issues.

Could be that the real Achilles' Heel is online photo forums... where would-be photographers spend too much time chatting and arguing and overthinking photography rather than actually practicing the craft/art.

I interpret "Achilles Heel" to mean a single point of weakness in an otherwise near invulnerable entity.
Photography is far too varied and complex for that!
If you mean analogue or "chemical" photography, the same applies.
But that certainly doesn't mean that we won't be faced with continual challenges and have to accept regular changes. And that costs are unlikely to ever be as low as they once were.

I would point out to the OP that this thread is just 6 hours old, and at least on the west coast of North America it overlaps with what is a work day for many.
If you want to gauge interest on an international forum, 24 hours would seem to be the minimum time needed.

I think it was up long enough to see which way the wind is blowing.

Sometimes winds ebb, and flow, and change direction.
FWIW, I would have waited until our European and Asian members had more time to chime in.
