I've admired photos by Montanus for many years. Kodak used to put out hardcover desk appointment calendars with a photo for every week. Beautiful photos under a certain theme for each year. Some of the best by a photographer named Neil Montanus, often incredible cityscapes in exotic locations. I used to wonder, "who is this guy? Is he a Nat Geo guy, shooting for himself on the side?"
Eventually I learned that he was a Kodak staffer. For a little fun look up information on one of his favorite models, "Kodak Girl" Georgia Durante. She became an inadvertent driver for the Rochester mob, thinking she was just picking up and delivering packages for friends from a rough night club.
commuted into Grand Central everyday for many, many years - seeing the colorama was wonderful. When they ended them it was a disappointment - passing of an age. The pictures were a technological achievement and impressive, though not always art!
GCT is a wonderful and beautiful space, but there's still something missing without it!
I had no idea.
Not many photographers had their hands in these things.
Looks like they started life as 8x20 and 12x20 negatives.?
Would love to see a 2 hour video about the process for these monsters.
Good Heavens................what kind of budget did Kodak throw at a project like this.?
