neg film latitude

Hi folks, I am planning a project which I want to shoot on Color neg film for a particular print look/finish.

Any one with experience of using Porta or Pro-s here give me an indication of stops of latitude I can expect from these films?

I made this photograph of Dead Link Removed with 5x4 160PortraVC. This was a test to see just how far I could push the film. It was taken at mid-day in June, about as bright as it gets in the northern hemisphere. The film recorded 11 stops (black, white, and nine stops with detail). It gave a perfectly flat response without shouldering that I could find, with no color shifting in the highlights. My conclusion from this and other testing is that modern color negative films have lattitude equivalent to modern B&W negative films.

I've done a little with 160S, and find it to be just about the same. I like the color balance of the Portra line better however, which is why I'm using it.

That said, don't be scared off of 400PortraNC. Perhaps the best color film ever made. It would be the only color film I use if I could afford it. I was utterly amazed to find that it's just as sharp, and graininess is almost exactly equal to the 160PortraVC. I didn't expect that in a film this fast.

Thanks Bruce, exactly the info I was after.

I am just about to start a project where I live of abandoned villages/settlements and I plan to shoot most of the project in indirect light, I am after a slightly desaturated as well as soft look to the final image. I think these films will have the feel I am after. The prints will be on Hahnemule Photo Rag 308gm.I love the watercolor look/feel of this paper.

I shall try some on a trip to Glencoe and the Highlands in a week or so.
