For those who don't have their own Darkroom, check out www.galleryofphotography.ie in Dublin.

Yearly membership is only €40 and you can hire the darkroom for €15 for three hours (€10 for students).

Chemicals are provided and they cater for 35mm up to 5x4.

I have used it in the past and it is an excellent facility. They also have a large range of photography books on sale at discounts to members.

I was a regular until i built my own darkroom. I've a problem with the powersupply on my enlarger at the moment and will be back to it in a few days.

I really miss being in a group darkroom and often found the helpful advice and opinions from other users to be excellent. I miss that.

The darkroom manager Pete Smyth really knows his stuff and can help out when necessary. And they have several courses for people starting out and getting back to film.

Has anyone used the darkrooms at Airfield Farm (www.airfield.ie)

It looks an excellent venue for a mini-conference *coughs*

I haven't used them, but Airfield is only 10 minutes from my office, so if you ever want me to check it out let me know. In terms of location, it would be handy enough to get to from the M50 (junction 13). It probably would be a good location for a mini-conference as it easy to get to, even close to a Luas station!

Looks ideal for a weekend workshop with Tim Rudman or Les McClean. It also looks like a good place to hold an exhibition.

I happened to drive Airfield today around 11.30am, the car park looked jammed. Just mentioning it as something to bear in mind.

Hi there,
Just thought I'd give Airfield a plug as I have been using the facilities for about a year now. It is a large fully equipped room that is greatly underused. I use it mainly for alt processes so don't use the enlargers but I can confirm that is has a Leitz medium format enlarger and a Durst Colour enlarger with digital timers et al. It also has a quite a few Jessops 35mm for the beginner. Contact me if you need any more details. But suffice to say it's a hidden gem that is greatly underused.

Thanks for the info Dominic and welcome to APUG. Airfield sounds like a hidden gem alright.

Hey,

Thanks for the heads-up on the light exchange. I just tried it out and I can heartily recommend it. You get the room to yourself which is always good. It's well equipped and the equipment is clean, new and works. It's good value (works out about 5 euros per hour) and they have morning, afternoon and evening sessions. I'll be going back on a regular basis.

Don't know of any in Wicklow, Airfield is probably the closest of the Dublin venues for you.

thanks pete, anyone else know of anywhere? garden shed perhaps?

I have a shed Peter, but not so sure it's big enough for you.. or equipped for your prints at least!

Signal is the only other available darkroom in Bray to the best of my knowledge, I know some of the schools have them still, but no idea on format or sizes.

If I can help in any way, just holler?

Peter,
The Dublin Camera Club have darkrooms available to members and is located in Lr. Camden Street. There is however a 2 month waiting period before you can have your own set of keys. In the meantime the darkrooms are available on Saturdays while the gallery is open from 10:00 to 17:00 hrs.

Cheers

A quick note from Galway..
If anyone needs a darkroom (like me!!), there is one available for renting at the Galway Art Centre in Dominick Street. It's basic, it has 3 enlargers available and a lot of accessories..But that's enough for an absolute beginner like me.
The only commitment is the yearly membership fee, but the rent is only 8€.

Bad news: I went into the Arts Centre a couple of weeks ago and they told me that the darkroom has closed. I know that the GMIT Cluain Mhuire campus has a darkroom, but as far as I know, its only open to students of the college.

Does anyone else know of any public accessible darkroom in Galway?

Cheers,

Eamo

Block T's New Darkroom

Block T in Dublin have just built a brilliant new darkroom. It's a lovely space with six or seven enlargers, ranging from an old leitz egg-shaped model to a gigantic durst standalone that can deal with large format negs.

There will be courses run out of the darkroom and it is also available to rent. 40 euro for an 8-hour session is the price being talked about at the moment, no membership fee either. The prices get a little more expensive for shorter sessions, but it's still extremely reasonable.

You can inquire about rental by emailing smithfieldarts at gmail.com

Check out the Block T website too - blockt dot ie
