Hey!

I’m working on a school project about stereoscopic photography and the iconic Nishika N8000 and Nimslo 3D cameras. I’m really interested in how these classic cameras could inspire modern photography and would love to get your thoughts!

A friend of mine suggested that this forum could be a good place to start. So, if you have a few minutes, I’ve put together a quick survey to gather feedback from people who appreciate this style of photography and those who are not familiar with it. Your input would be super helpful!

Thanks in advance for your time and insights!

My own preference for stereo is larger film. I have a Stereo Realist format camera (5 perf frames on 35 mm), a Discovery Channel half-frame, and I've done "cha-cha" with other cameras.

Welcome aboard.

My first tip is that not everyone "Googles", so that will limit your audience.

Second, I'd try to find some books that deal with the history of stereo photography -- it's as old as photography itself. I don't have any titles to recommend, but stereo cameras range from very small 16mm cameras to very large cameras -- and there are many types of stereo cameras that create the stereo effect in different ways.

A good exploration of any topic is to start with its history -- at least a summary of it.

I've taken a few rolls on a stereo camera. I enjoyed it, but don't like Wigglegrams or any type of quickly looping image as they give me eye strain - I prefer red/cyan anaglyphs or images through a stereo viewer that separates what each of your eyes sees.

Stereo images presented in this way really do seem more "real" than an ordinary flat photograph.

I like cross-eye viewing, as I can free view at any reasonable image size. Wide-eye I need a viewer, or the images need to have the same or less separation as my pupils (~67 mm). Wigglegrams don't bother me though, and they are the easiest to display on a screen.

Welcome! What school and what curriculum/course are you doing this project within?

You have an interesting school project. Welcome to Photrio!

Welcome aboard @WiggleRevival!

Having looked at your survey, it seems to be designed to gauge interest in a re-commercialization of these cameras.

Can you tell us a little more about this school project?

Yes!

Im writing a paper along with a presentation for a course about the history of photography. A friend and I were already interested in the forgotten technology that is stereoscopic photography, so we are trying to gather as much feedback from camera enthousiastes as possible. Where i live in switzerland, not many people know about this technology, so i'm shooting my shots on blogs and reddit threads, but so far i didnt get as much feedback as i thought i would!

Well, that's a little odd, because your survey questions appear to aim more at testing market demand for this. It doesn't look like the empirical material you'd need for a historical overview. What else is going on?

If that’s the goal, then it might be worth considering the market interest when 3-D phototography, especially lenticular photographs, was released/revived… it was quite limited.
