Need camera advice

I am a film shooter but some recent snapshots with my point and shoot digi have me thinking i need to explore digi a little more so i want a better camera.

I will mainly be shooting macro and some nature stuff,i really miss my nikon f5 since i switched to 4x5 and want to get back into nature and color shooting.I only do b+w with film.

Canon g10 14 mp for 500 dollars or less,fits in pocket can close focus in macro mode and i wont print larger than 8x10 if i print at all.

or

Nikon d100 6 mp or with lens for less then 400 dollars.
at what point is the dslr than the g10 and its smaller sensor,6mp,8mp 10mp or larger?

I would prefer the smaller all in one unless the dslr route is superior at the same price point.
Any advice would be helpful.

By the way this was done with a 7mp point and shoot so i know a dslr is not absolutely needed for good shots.

well ... I prefer my aging Nikon Coolpix 5000 over the G10 ... especially with regard to price point.

It is only 5Mpixels, but if used in RAW returns excellent results.

KEH has them for about $100 and with firmware upgrade will write RAW ... get a fast CF card! I still use one (its on my desk right now) as its unparalleled as a compact image making tool (great macro, tough body, nikon flash system integration...) and has been used by catalog photographers for some time.

Some links here and here where I make some oblique discussions about cameras and compare incamera JPG to RAW which use the 5000 as an example.

Presently I use a G1 panasonic because I love the ability to add lenses, its only 600g with the kit (28~90 effective) zoom and is generally compact enough that I'd take it anywhere. I might consider the GF-1 with the 20mm pancake if that extra portablity was my thing.

when i started with digital it was a d100, which has given me great results (we all know it is only about the camera ), but i have been happy .

recently i wanted to get a better walking around camera that i could put into my pocket and not carry around a lot of heavy equipment.

after lots of help here and testing a variety of cameras i have ended up with an olympus e-pen 1, which i love , feels like a camera, fits in my pocket (17mm lens) and certainly produces better result than my coolpix.

your milage may vary but that is my 2cents

Well, I have seen the G10 and it does give some good results. The D100 is dated, but has a good *crisp* cmos sensor.

Just remember, it's *not* the camera it's the *glass*. The G10 is what it is. The D100 can have it's glass replaced with better glass.

exactly ... which is why I really love my G1

to the OP try reading this thread, about using a G1 as the base of a system camera.

its not just compact, its an SLR (now the term SLD is coming out Single Lens Directview ...)

Notice post #2 in that thread ...

If you get a new DSLR stick with Nikon or Canon. For a used DSLR stay far from any Nikon made prior to the D700/D3's, as they're too noisy. For a used old DSLR Canon is the best. For new, either with a slight edge perhaps to Nikon.

Stay away from P&S if you want more control, less noise, thin DOF, lens choices and more artistic license.
