I recently upgraded my tripod to a Gitzo Systematic 3 Traveller and was looking at replacing my Bogen 3275 to a Linhof 3D micro geared head.

The issues I have with the Bogen:
1) Play in the head, much more noticeable with the new tripod.
2) Can't rotate the back on my Technika since the head has a huge chuck of metal in the way.
3) Adjustments are not very precise.
4) Only rated for 11 pounds

Can anybody give me any anything to look out for with the head, any shortcomings? I know about the 12-degree limitation already. I was already told that I should look into the Arca-Swiss C1, but that head is damn ugly.

I can't really help, but just wanted to thank you for an intriguing thread title.:munch:

Have a look at the Gitzo G2270m, which would be a nice fit for your tripod. Movements are super smooth and precise. The best 3 way head I encountered so far.

FWIF two heads are better than one.

(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

maybe this will help ?

Linhof micro 3d head=Yeow $$$.

Check around for pictures of the EMO head. The thing pans at both top and bottom and both use a 6 ball bearing race.
It can be converted from a 2 way to a ball head by removing an axle that goes through the ball.

It's a shame it doesn't have geared movements.
