Need advice about buying expired Agfachrome CT100i

Hello fellow film shooters,

I can buy some expired Agfachrome CT100i (the proper Agfa), for a relatively cheap price. The films expired in 1996 and have not been refigerated. However they have been stored in a dark place. Does someone have experience shooting this expired film, or can you advice me?

I've been lurking around on Flickr and found examples of ppl who shot 20 year old CT100, some look horrible, some look as if nothing happened (even shelf stored).

Should I give it a try or refuse the offer?

I used a 35mm cassette of the "proper" CT100i (IIRC expired about 2004) last year, on mostly landscapes and buildings. It had been refigerated (not frozen) for most of its life, but in the last 2-3 years it had been forgotten at the bottom of a gadget bag. The results were "OK" and usable, but seemed to lack something of the "sparkle" of fresh film, difficult to describe but a sort of dullness of colour even in sunlit shots.
TBH, I wouldn't pay much for 20 y.o. film not refigerated, and certainly not without having at least the chance of running a test film. Expired film can be a bargain sometimes, but you have to weigh any saving against the other costs and time of your picture-taking.

Sorry to say but you will definitivly have worst colors ever seen (expired 1996)
I would guess you will have NO COLORS
in case of this a cheap (expired) bw film
is the better choise.
Notice : Agfa Precisa CT 100 - the original film has very pore stability in case of expirement.Not in concern to long time archive issues.
You should have color shiftings/crossings (outside a freezer ) only month after expired date.
Sometimes within the expired date.
The same you could have with Kodak
+ 3 - 4 years !!!! And with Fuji E6 films
+ 5 - 6 years !!!!! But no way with 1996!

Hmm, as I said, I have seen examples where the film still was good. But also examples where it's absolute garbage. So you are probably right for the fact that the film is very unstable. I did some research and found an example of someone who shot expired 1996 agfachrome (a coincedence) and the film came back blank. I won't risk it and buy something else with the money thank you all

Look just to this here :


It is you AGFA CT100 i ...from the period you mentioned.
It is ok. within the expired date (mostly).
And the expired date of yours should have been somewhere in 1998.
If this film would have seen a lab in 2003
you may imagine such kind of colors :



and now you have to add + 14 years.
I would also say you would have nothing
on your developed slides.

I forgot (only 1 time) an old Kodachrome25 from 1991.
As I noticed it in 2009-2010 I was forced to hurry up to dwaynesphoto....

The colors of that films were terrible
(after 18 years with undeveloped latent images )...but it looks much much better
than this example from above.

But it was Kodachrome.....

I've bought supposed-to-have-been-refrigerated AGFA CT100 with a BB of sometime in 2002. Even stored this cold, they all have a green cast. I'd say avoid for anything other than cross processing.
