Vic, FOMA Variant 123 semi matt is a paper very close to 118 and seems fairly fast... Or if you want lightening speed, Kentmere VC Warmtone. It has a similar surface to MCC118 but is extremely fast in my experience.
I use Kentmere FP VC and it is about twice as fast as Forte Polywarmtone. I have to use an 8x ND filter with my Beseler 45S head, plus the VC filtration at f11-16 for 11x14 - 16x20 prints from conventional negatives.
Enlarging a paper negative seems a daunting task. I would suggest scanning and heading over to the hybrid forum for making a digital negative. Of course you could always try making a contact "positive" using a reversal process.
