I received a Majestic tripod a few days ago for free, but it doesn't have a head on it. The guy said that the center column is a pretty standard size and should be easy to find a head for it, but I'm not sure where to start. Do the Majestic Tripods all us the same size center column, or should I go figure out the model number to know what it is? I didn't see a model number anywhere, but I can look again. It's an old tripod, made of aluminum (I think) legs and the main piece is cast metal of some sort.

There are three types and you can order the heads from a dealer like B&H or Adorama--

http://www.bencher.com/photo/gearheads.php

If you have a tripod with a normal 3/8" screw, you can use any head, but if you have one of the tubes, Bencher also sells adapters, so you can use them with heads that have a 3/8" screw mount.

Go for a Majestic gear head . It has difference size of platform for difference weight of camera. I use it for my 8X10 camera. Under the condition your away from your car within 50 feet, its heavy and sturdy.

David, thanks for that link. If looks like mine is one with the 1-1/2" post. I see that the gear head is at least a few hundred dollars. I guess that I should add that I'm a student, and on a tight budget. I guess I'll start keeping an eye on auctions, and figure out whether it's cheaper to go the adapter route and get a cheap head.

I don't shoot and large format yet, and my heaviest camera would either be my Mamiya M645 or my Minolta 7 with a long lens on it.

Posted wirelessly..

These heads are cheap on eBay, particularly for the post mount, and they're pretty indestructable, so there's little downside to buying used.

I have an old Majestic tripod that I got for $20 at a garage sale. It has aluminum legs and a massive cast iron geared head. Weighs about 12 pounds. I see them come up on ebay or craigslist from time to time fairly cheap.

interested in parting with the head? I'll be moving back to SD in a couple weeks from up near SLO.

Sorry but the answer is no. I still use it regularly for my 4x5 cameras. Even in a stiff breeze I have no problem with camera shake. If I see another one listed somewhere I'll let you know.
