Need a grab and go camera

Fuji x100vi might be the best cam I've ever owned, over your budget but as gbroadbridge says, older models are still solid. Something about the x-trans sensor in particular situations really agrees with me compared to other options.

I use a Sony RX100-4. Built-in pop-up eye-level viewfinder when the sun washes out the LED display. Zoom lens. Pop-up flash. Pocketable. Great 4K movies. Pricey.

Do any of you guys enjoy working with lens filters, but simply do without them when using cameras like these that cannot accept a filter?

I have a similar need as the OP's and was ready to order a PowerShot V1. But then I learned lens filters are not accepted and considered whether I'd be okay with that.
 

I once had a Leica X1 and while it has it quirks the snaps came out tag sharp.
 
The pain in the behind part of these choices to me is sorting out all of the features from model to model; some additions, some removals and which of those is most important.

I had a guy at a local shop tell me that a Fuji x100f wouldn't be able to get the same images as my Eos 6d mkII. I didn't hang out to argue the point that the x100 would let me get a lot of "missed" shots and that was the point, and I wasn't trying to get apples to apples out of a compact camera.
That being said, the used X100f copies I have seen all looked like they'd been dropped down flights of stairs and were still $700 or more.
 
I had the chance to handle a couple of "grab-and-go" cameras I had been curious about today; a used Sony a6000 and a used Canon g1x mkiii.
The spec sheet of the Canon is pretty good. it has weather sealing, a built-in flash a built-in ND filter and all the other typical stuff but the thing is tiny. I'm not sure it would work for me in practice. The Sony is only a fraction bigger (wider overall body I think) and I need to get on one of the sites that has a complete a6k comparison table to sort out the info.

I have no idea what to choose. The Canon is fairly old (release date) and there are rumors of a mkiv but who knows. I don't think any sony a6k model has been weather sealed.
 
I think of a GRAB & GO camera as something you don't mind losing or damaging (by mistake, of course), or having stolen, etc. For me it's the Minolta Hi-matic G2 and GF -- or for digital the Nikon EZPIX 5600.
 
Grab and go for me is the camera closest to me, in a shoulder bag and loaded with film or a charged battery in the case of digital. Mostly I don't grab and go, rather take with intention.
 
OK. I'll drop grab and go in favor of "companion" camera. Something much more compact than my DSLR to accompany film outings. I would like to keep it something made in the last 5-6 years.
 
Not a traditional compact camera, Pentax WG 1000, weather sealed, 16 MP on a small sensor, still in production under $300.

Are you looking to take a system camera or a P&S? I like the Fuji x100 for P&S, the XPro2 for a system camera.
 
I'm leaning point and shoot since my dslr counts as a system camera. I'm leaning pretty heavily to the x100 series because of feature set and size of the camera. There are a few smaller ones that would seem to make more sense for what I want, and my hands are not huge but big enough where a few of the point and shoot models are simply too small to be handled effectively.

As an example, if I feel like a 4x5 outing, also bringing the Eos 6d and 2 lenses makes for a lot of bag on and bag off unless I wear the Canon around my neck or shoulder That would be much easier on the pocket book. There's an Olympus "tough" p&s too.

while I'm ambling about.

There is a Panasonic "bridge" camera (Lumix FZ2500) with a pretty impressive feature set, but I need to see it in person. There's also the Olympus micro 4/3 stuff
 
The X100 makes great images and looks cool to boot. You don’t need the latest version, either. They’re all great, some just have added bells & whistles, features like video.
 
Here's a short anecdote about why it's important to be a shopper who has done some research. A local store had a used x100f about 6 months ago (I wasn't ready to throw cash on the barrel head that day) I couldn't remember the lineage and he said the x100f was f for "first" and was the oldest and didn't make sense given I owned a 6d mkII. One has to ignore the fact that the 2 cameras would occupy very different roles for me which I didn't explain to this person. Maybe he wanted to buy it himself? Anyway, it pays to do some research.

As to the x100, since I have never used one, am I likely to "miss" the added focus points of the V and VI over the earlier models?
I honestly can't recall if I have ever used the selectable focus point feature in my Canon so number of focus points is likely a non-issue for me, but I thought I would ask.

A used or NOS Nikon Z50 is the cat's meow. Even the kit lenses are amazingly good.

I've been using the Nikon One J5 model with success. The only thing I don't like: low ISO threshold (typical in that era) and the mini-sd (you have no idea how often I drop those things). It def. shoots RAW (NEF), fits in your pocket or bag and can connect well to modern phones (though data speed is a bit slow for those larger images).
