I found a neat little program for the iphone... called pinhole assist. it's $1.99 :smile:

With "Pinhole Assist"

• Compute exposure time ;
• Measure light;
• Enter your camera aperture from the predefined list or compute it;
• Let the assistant automatically compensate for reciprocity of film (correction for long exposures), or use your own curves.

I use an L758 spot meter and experience. The iPhone is left at home when I'm in DND mode! :smile:

It's not in the Australian iTunes Store. Either it's US only or it's still coming (slowly). Guess I'll have to stick to my normal procedure of conventional meter plus manually calculated adjustment.

Its OK, but still some bugs, new update crashes when trying to access the film curves and the aperture value doesn't save and resets back to some default value. Also the exposure compensation doesn't seem to work.

^ You were using a meter in an iPod (?) recently. What was that? It seemed to have worked well with what B&W pics I saw you setting up.

Pinhole
(Hi, I am the maker of Pinhole Assist)
The application is on sale in any country appStore http://itunes.com/apps/pinholeassist.

There is a bug when upgrading to 1.5, you need to remove the app and reinstall it from the store.
The exposure compensation is not activated by default : go the the "curves" tab and select your reciprocity setting (and edit it if your want, using iTunes to access the file).

Regards,
Henry

Hi Henry,

Thanks for the advice. However, when I went into the appStore in Australia today from within iTunes and did a search on "Pinhole Assist" it came up blank.

Cheers, Peter.

(Eats humble pie)......when I went in to the App Store directly on my iPhone it found Pinhole Assist. But it can't find it using iTunes = weird. :whistling:

Pinhole Assist 1.5 now supports multiple reciprocity charts, There are free charts to download:

A chart adapted from Jim Shull's The Hole Thing (the one I currently used for films)
Several charts derived from formulas by Gadget Gainer on APUG forums :
400TX
TMX
TMY
HP5+
100 Delta
Several chart derived from formulas originating from Without Lenses website
T max 400
T max 100
TRiX & Plus 125
Ilford films
A chart for Ilford films

This paper pinhole calculator is great. I wish I had it year ago. There is similar one there : http://www.ilfordphoto.com/Webfiles/2011106152612113.pdf

Please note that these calculators do not account for reciprocity failure.

And here is a chart for calculating pinhole sizes (i made it :smile:, sorry it is in french)

new version of Pinhole Assist for iPhone

There is a new version of Pinhole Assist on the Apple Store since yesterday (Feb 27, 2012)

banniere_compacte_en.png

What's New in Version 1.7 (Feb 27, 2012)
* NEW: Bubble level for accurate postioning of camera
* NEW: Timer, for accurate metering of exposure time. Tap timer icon next to exposure time.
What's New in version 1.6.1 (January 2012)
* enhanced stability of the application. All known bugs and crash removed.

"Pinhole Assist" will be your companion to argentic pinhole photography.

• Compute exposure time;
• Use built-in exposition timer and bubble level for optimal shot
• Mesure light;
• Enter your camera aperture from the predefined list or compute it;
• Let the assistant automatically compensate for reciprocity of film (correction for long exposures), or use your own curves.

Estimate light or measure it directly with the camera.

Enter your camera aperture or compute it from your camera geometry.

** Many pinhole camera settings are already included : Zeroimage™, Diana™, Holga pinhole, Ilford/Harman Titan and many more !

Select your film's sensitivity (ASA) and decide if you use reciprocity compensation.

Select the reciprocity curve you want to use.Via iTunes, you can add/edit/delete the reciprocity correction curves. Go to the app Web Site for further instructions.

Tip #1: adjust cell measurement via the iPhone/iPod "Settings" application.

Tip #2: if using an external cell, set its sensibility to 100 ASA.

Light measurement is only available on devices with camera. The manual setting allows you do do estimation with text indication, or use an external cell.

Cameras predefined settings:
• Diana multi pinhole
• Holga 120 pinhole wide
• Holga 120 pinhole stereo
• Zeroimage 135
• Zeroimage 2000
• Zeroimage 45, +1 frame, plus 2 frames
• Holga 135 Pinhole
• Holga 120 pinhole
• Ilford Titan 72 mm (basic) , 110mm, 150 mm
Any other camera can be accommodated.

Reciprocity charts included :
• A chart adapted from Jim Shull's The Hole Thing (the one I currently used for films) in two versions for easy editing
• A chart for photo paper
• A sample chart
Downloadable from the web site :
•Several charts derived from formulas by Gadget Gainer on APUG forums :
• 400TX
• TMX
• TMY
• HP5+
• 100 Delta
•Several chart derived from formulas originating from Without Lenses website
• T max 400
• T max 100
• TRiX & Plus 125
• Ilford films
•A chart for Ilford films

I have been using pinhole assist for a while now, and it is really becoming a useful little app.

A question and an observation:

Question: What is the difference between the ASA setting on the exposure page and the ASA setting on the film page? I'm pretty sure I know what the latter does, but not so sure about the former.

Observation: I seem to get longer exposure times (1.5-2x) using this app (without accounting for reciprocity) than by using zero image's wheel or the pinhole designer charts. Am I using the program incorrectly, and is that somehow related to my question?

I've had the same problem. I' getting a lot of overexposure if I just use the app. So I gave up and use the scale that came with my ZI and light meter.

Hum, this is right : I checked the app upon David's remark, with the "sunny rule" : f/16 with EV=15, for 100 ASA, give a speed of 1/100
There is an error in the computation : the app give a +1IL result (ie it double the time of exposure". I do not know since when this bug was introduced, at least since v1.7.
I will release an update as soon as possible (ie within one week).
Meanwhile, I advised you set a correction of -1 IL to get the correct value.
