We just had a great gathering in July. It must be time to plan another. It is time to think of shooting film, gathering together to see spring and summer’s work, climbing ledges, walking the OH & Erie Canal, photographing waterfalls and having group fun at a gathering of like minded friends and hopefully new faces.

My wife Dolly, the girls two blond lady Labrador Retrievers and I would like to invite you to our home for a photography gathering starting about 5 PM Friday, September 17, Saturday, September 18 and Sunday, September 19th. We have been doing this, 5-6 times a year, for about two years with attendance ranging from 10-25 photographers. It has been a blast for us. I hope you have enjoyed it as much. For more information about the flavor of these events read the threads on the just completed May and July, 2010 event.

The following is boiler plate based on earlier experiences.
Available options we have enjoyed before will be in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park,
http://www.nps.gov/cuva/index.htm

Within five miles:
Blue Hen Falls http://gowaterfalling.com/waterfalls/bluehen.shtml
Buttermilk Falls http://gowaterfalling.com/waterfalls...milkCUVA.shtml
Brandywine Falls http://gowaterfalling.com/waterfalls/brandywine.shtml
Virginia Kendall Ledges
http://hikingohioparks.com/virginia-kendall-park-hiking-ohio-parks.html
Everett Road Covered Bridge
http://www.nps.gov/cuva/historyculture/everett-road-covered-bridge.htm
Maps http://www.nps.gov/cuva/planyourvisit/maps.htm
Several new visitors were interested in the OH Turnpike bridge over the Cuyahoga Valley National Park http://wiki.worldflicks.org/ohio_turnpike_bridge_over_cuyahoga_river.html#
and the three 19th century churches in the scenic little town of Peninsula, OH.

If nature/landscape is not your thing, Cleveland, the flats, where it is difficult to take a picture with less than three bridges, and five is more likely, awaits you.

A photography exhibit several of us have enjoyed will be at the Akron Art Museum.
“Detroit Disassembled: Photographs by Andrew Moore”
http://www.akronartmuseum.org/exhibitions/details.php?unid=1499

The event will be in Bath, Ohio, between Cleveland and Akron, five miles south of the Ohio Turnpike and Route I-77, meeting at a private home, two miles from the edge of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. For a rough estimate of distance use zip 44286 in Mapquest.com. If some visitors want to camp by the garden, they are most welcome. Others can stay at local motels. The Hampton Inn, Richfield, OH (1 800 Hampton) at the OH Turnpike entrance and intersection with I-77, about five miles away is the most popular.

Come as early as Friday, 5:00 PM. We usually have coffee & rolls each morning at 10:00 AM to allow for early shooters and late sleepers. We gather again about 5:00 PM to show prints, tell lies and go out to dinner. Sunset shooting is available, but previously showing prints and telling stories prevailed. While you are here the Lady Labradors will entertain with their splashing stick routines. One regular will try to convince you that bacon ice cream is a bit of heaven. There is an orchard-home made ice cream business near by. When we learn how many are coming we can order a porta potty if there are enough to pay for it by contribution ($112). Our home stumbles through on an ancient septic system and well so we must ask you to endure this porta potty inconvenience.

We are trying to have a loose organizational shell under which all cats may be comfortably herded. The plan will evolve until the majority is happy and the protesters fall asleep.

All film shooters are welcome. Who is interested in coming? What information is needed?

If you have not been here before please PM me with name, address, phone, email and emergency contact in case you do something you shouldn’t have. I will return with directions.

Welcome to the Powers’ house.
Hosts, John & Dolly Powers
Labradors: Cindy and Savannah

Coinciding with this gathering are some very interesting and photogenic events.

There will be two steam engines pulling variously scheduled trains through the park that weekend, http://cvsr.com/steam-in-the-valley.aspx
“The Viscose Company #6 is a 1925, Baldwin-built, coal-fired 0-4-0 saddle tank steam engine and comes to CVSR from New York.

The Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 Berkshire No. 765. This is the historic steam locomotive No. 765: a high-stepping, fourteen wheeled magnificent machine that stands 15 feet tall, weighs 404 tons, and goes over 60 miles an hour, restored to the way it looked and sounded when it was built by the Lima Locomotive Works in 1944. This engine is the largest operating steam locomotive east of the Mississippi, and is the pride of the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society. There are several excursions and special events with these great engines “

The Glenmore Country Club in Canton, about half an hour south of here will have the 16th annual gathering of significant cars
featuring Historic Motorcars of Cleveland, Cars of Giotto Bizzarrini - and Duesenberg!
September 17 - 19, 2010 http://www.glenmoorgathering.com/2010-Preview.html

Weather permitting we should be starting the Fall Color in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Can't wait. I'll bring our copy of the book as well if anyone wants to take a look.

Good idea. The Museum Bookstore is out. Both they and Amazon said an minimum of a month delivery. That seems odd for a new book.

I was very glad I at least made the museum visit and got to catch up with a few folks, you and Dolly, and briefly meet a couple of the new people the last time. Demolition is over. Plumbing improvements were made, and some construction mistakes corrected. Last of the tile gets laid today, grout tomorrow, then caulking, sealing, and some painting after that. Had to decommission the darkroom and move some shelving to put in a plumbing access panel. But the project is turning out very nicely.

If I'm still on the mainland, I really want to make it over for this one. And shoot, too, if anyone can help me watch the little guy. The steam engines sound cool - I know my dad has always been into steam engines, so I'd like to get a cool shot for him.

Welcome again Lee. Welcome again all who have been here before and any film shooters who would like to join us.

Bethe,
Sure hope you can make it. Never having been a father of a new borne, I'll have to leave that to anyone with experience.

I found a contact on the steam engine page and wrote them offering a portfolio of images if they grant access a "back stage pass" as it were. Wonder if they will respond positively.

Lee,

I am really worried about you. You are so shy. I hope you can come out of your shell and get into this hobby.

An interesting thing happened the last time the big steam engine came to the valley. There was to be a big opening event Saturday morning at the Rockside station (north end of the park). I got there an hour early to scope out a good place for the 7x17. Someone mentioned that the train was just across Rockside Road (north-follow the tracks) at very large parking lot. By then there were several hundred people milling about the Rockside station and still no train. I was the third person to figure this out and had all the time I wanted to get up close and personal with the engine.

Once the train got under way each station was packed. Peninsula was swamped with people. Just south of Everett Rd. (covered bridge, our house) is a tiny station at Indigo Lake on Riverview Rd. There were just a few people at this station and plenty of room to take pictures.

History has been known to repeat itself.

I'll be interested in seeing steam trains. I was a little dissapointed his last spring, the "Thomas The Train" exhibit featured a 'fake' engine, whereas in the past it had always been a live steam engine.

Hi John,
Heard nothing back from the Choo-Choo People. So the little station might be a good second choice. I'll pay the therapist overtime John if you and I could talk him into a 2 for one deal. ;-O

John: I have marked off the time on my calendar and informed my beloved that I will be acquainting myself with your blond girls that weekend. Which, on top of telling right after returning from a trip out west, has further endeared me to her! Count me in this time around.

Dan,

I am really glad you are coming and the girls will be thrilled. On the other hand I’m not sure I want you alone with my good lookin blonds. Have you considered bringing your fair damsel as a make up gesture for your western indiscretions? Would this sort of event be of interest to her? She is most welcome if you and she want her to come. Only 43,095 people and whoever they show these posts to will read the answer.

Yes John......I'll bring my boots

Dave

Dave,

Glad you are coming. Hope you are enjoying the lens. We haven't had anywhere near the amount of rain recently. The falls were great and I don't think I ever had as much fun delivering a sale. Come on. I think you will enjoy the other folks attending.

The girls especially enjoy hikers so you and Dan Henderson should be well admired.
