Here in the dead of winter it is time to think about warmer things, time to gather for a spring photo event with good people.

Last August we had some 25 visit for fun, photography, print review and food. We missed a few regulars and gained a few new folks. It is time to get out shooting film and wetplate, come together to see recent work, climb ledges, walk the OH & Erie Canal, photograph waterfalls, explore the Ohiofarmmuseum.com, see the Flats and have group fun at a gathering of like minded friends and hopefully new faces.

Dolly, the Girls, three yellow lady Labrador Retrievers and I would like to invite you to our home for a film photography gathering starting 5 PM Friday, May 16th and continuing through May 17th and 18th. We have been doing this, several times a year, for six years with attendance ranging from 10-25 photographers. It has been a blast for us. I hope you have enjoyed it as much or will try it for the first time at this event. For more information about the flavor of these events read the threads on earlier NE OH Gatherings.

Lee L has kindly built and maintained a Google Mapbook with most of our previously visited locations. https://sites.google.com/site/neohapug/

Available options we have enjoyed in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park,
http://www.nps.gov/cuva/index.htm

Within five miles of our house:
Blue Hen Falls http://gowaterfalling.com/waterfalls/bluehen.shtml
Brandywine Falls http://gowaterfalling.com/waterfalls/brandywine.shtml

Please note the obvious, waterfalls can be dangerous. The day after our May, 2011 event a person unknown to us slipped and fell sixty feet to his death at Brandywine Falls.

Everett Road Covered Bridge
Maps http://www.nps.gov/cuva/planyourvisit/maps.htm
The National Park Service offers a general paper map of the whole park. We will have a stack of these waiting for you. Please ask if you don’t see them.

Several visitors have been interested in the OH Turnpike bridge over the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the three 19th century churches in the scenic little town of Peninsula, OH.

There is often fog early in the morning in the Cuyahoga River Valley and locally over our pond. This can be natural or self induced depending on activities. It can add interesting aspects to your photography. Some have slept in for six years and never noticed. It is your decision.

If nature/landscape is not your thing, Cleveland, the Flats, where it is difficult to take a picture with less than three bridges, and five is more likely, awaits you. At the May event two Large Formaters set up at sunrise at the Russian Orthodox St. Theodosius church, with its 13 onion domes. http://sttheodosius.org/home_1.html
It is a beautiful building inside and out and the people we met were most welcoming.

I have been working on a twenty 7x17 picture series in the flats with my friend Peter Spangenberg who is shooting 8x10 and 5x7 there. We hope to scan in a few prints to this thread to tempt you to come. I hope any previous attendees will add their pictures of any of the attractions that they have enjoyed.

“The Ohio & Erie Canal was a technological marvel. The inland waterway incorporated a series of sandstone locks that enabled boats to climb differences in elevation along the Continental Divide. The steepest section of the canal was between Akron and the Little Cuyahoga River. In a single mile, 15 locks, or "steps," were necessary.”

Richfield, Ohio’s Jim Fry has created The Museum of Western Reserve Farms and Equipment, dedicated to preserving the tools, equipment, skills and way of life lived by Ohioans in the 1800s. Mr. Fry, a farmer, historian, and artist, has collected 44 buildings including what may be the largest surviving early blacksmith shop in Ohio, the oldest barn in the state, the Stouffer farm smokehouse, and one of the largest surviving post and beam barns in Summit County. The farm is constantly evolving as animals, tools, buildings, machines, in various states of preservation are added or combined into exhibits. This is 1.4 miles from our house. http://www.Ohiofarmmuseum.com/

The home of the Weatherhead School of Management is the Frank Gehry-designed Peter B. Lewis Building. Their web site no longer mentions. Tours but the exterior is there for wonderful images. http://weatherhead.case.edu/about/facilities/lewis

On occasion it has been too hot, too wet, too tired, to hike in the woods lugging heavy gear. We are fortunate to be located between the Cleveland Museum of Art and The Akron Art Museum. Both have very good photography departments and have been kind enough to have excellent exhibits coinciding with our calendar. We have been known to drop dirty, sweaty gear behind, make a group visit to an ethnic restaurant and attend either or both museums as needed. It is all about like minded individuals sharing an interest.

The event will be in Bath, Ohio, between Cleveland and Akron, five miles south of the intersection of the Ohio Turnpike and Route I-77, meeting at a private home, two miles from the edge of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. For a rough estimate of time and distance use zip 44286 in Mapquest.com. If some visitors want to camp by the garden, they are most welcome. Others can stay at local motels. The Hampton Inn, Richfield, OH (1 800 Hampton) and Motel 6 and 8 Richfield at the OH Turnpike entrance and intersection with I-77 about five miles from our house are the most popular.

Come as early as Friday, 5:00 PM. Saturday we gather at 9 AM and 5:00 PM to go shooting, show prints, tell lies and go out to dinner. Alternatively we have been known to call in pizza. Print showing and pizza eating are done at separate times with a cleaning of paws in between. Sunday we usually go out to breakfast at 10:00 AM to allow for early shooters and late sleepers. Some stay on to shoot, others start the long drive home. We have drawn film photo crazies from: OH, WI, IL, IN, MI, PA, CT and Ontario. It is all about the camaraderie of people following a hobby. One regular attendee will try to convince you that bacon ice cream is a bit of heaven. There is an orchard and home made ice cream business near by. Quality control visits and inspection checks are mandatory, often requiring multiple tests.

When we learn how many are coming we can order a porta potty if there are enough to pay for it by contribution ($117 divided amongst us). Our home stumbles through on an ancient septic system and well so we must ask you to endure this porta potty inconvenience. We understand new septic systems are about $30K and don’t always work as well as the old one.

We are trying to have a loose organizational shell under which all cats may be comfortably herded. The plan will evolve until the majority is happy and the protesters fall asleep.

All film and wetplate shooters are welcome.
Who is interested in coming? What other information is needed?

If you have not been here before please PM me with name, address, phone, email and emergency contact in case you do something you shouldn’t have. I will return with directions and our phone number. If you have been here before but have new information please update us.

Welcome to the Powers’ house.
Hosts, John & Dolly Powers
Labradors: Gabby (age 5), Cindy (9) and Savannah (14)

All links were functioning at posting time, though many had gone dead and needed a change since the last event. Please send updates as you find them.

My grandson's birthday is the 16th; it depends on when the party is. But it's on my calendar.

Also, I and five other Westbridge CC members went to the Cleveland Print Room to see the Vivian Maier prints. Amazing; what a great show. And CPR looks like a great resource for you Cleveland folks; good activities and events.

Mark,

Hope you can make it. Your CC fiends are most welcome if they don’t mind a film event.

The Vivian Maier show is great. Did you see this video and the two additional ones following? The link was posted earlier in another thread.

Looking forward to it!
I'm currently in the middle of a big project (finishing the basement in my spare time) and have not touched a LF camera for 2 months now. Getting close to the end and looking forward to getting the darkroom up and running again. I have everything closed down and cameras stored away due to risk if drywall dust.

BTW I was downtown yesterday afternoon and googled the PrintRoom to see the exhibit but got directed to loading dock on the the back of what seemed like an abandon building. Not sure if I was in the correct place or not (by the I90 entrance ramp). Is there a sign on the building? Any signage advertising the Vivian Maier exhibit?

Dale,

Get that darkroom finished. You gots prints to make.

Thank you again for that long handled grabber thingy. It really pulls the prints out of the vertical washer must better than the long pole.

The Cleveland Print Room 2550 Superior Ave E, Cleveland, OH 44114 (216) 401-5981. If you are lucky or time it right you can get an on street metered parking spot. The door is in the middle of the block. Some times there is a portable billboard like sign out front. If that doesn't work you have to park in back and walk around. There may be an entrance in back, but I haven't found it.

In my overview of attractions I realize I left out the hit of last August’s event. Peter took us to Lakeview Cemetery, which turned out to be a huge sculpture garden. Peter has been shooting there a lot since then. Hopefully he will add some of those shots as a teaser for what you may find there.

HaHa! Yes, I do know how to setup a nice base camp! Yep, I've been in the darkroom printing like a madman during these cold snowbound days.

Hope to make it. Doubt I will pry Sue away from Spring Birding. I'll be watching the weather and possibly camping. We got ourselves a new tent, although the warmth of a hotel shower is always a plus.

After the snow today this is sounding like a dream! Hopefully everyone is getting through this winter unscathed. I'll officially be living in the Vandergrift / Leechburg area in March so it will be a longer drive but Lynn and I will certainly try to make it anyway.

Congratulations on the new digs. Hope you both will make it here.

Weather.com says we got 4.4 inches overnight and can expect another 1" today. We have 12-18 inches on the ground. The girls have a blast in it, Cindy especially. She dives in like a submarine and comes up about ten feet further on with a very happy look about her.

I read that 88% of the Great Lakes are frozen and that Lake Erie is almost completely so. This is a 20 year high. Ship traffic in the Flats has stopped. I have read it will mean higher water levels in the summer. I am trying to sort out how this be a factor in our lives. Our boat is tied to a fixed dock in Huron, so it will be easier for old folks to get in and out. The last two years they have had to dredge the river by the marina, so no more sucking up mud into the cooling system. I am not sure what it will mean for construction in the Flats. It certainly will affect the shore birds that Lee L and Sue G love.

Looking forward to seeing you both and your work.

Correction. Just after the last post the man with the 4x4 truck plow came, did our drive and the ¼ mile down to my mother-in-law's house. I went out to clean off our cars and found 8-10 inches on them. Cindy will be very happy.

Thursday it is supposed to be 47 degrees and raining. That should be a real mess. I think I will get the rowing dingy out of the barn.

At the Akron Art Museum

Film Screening: The Vivian Maier Mystery
February 20, 2014, 6:30 pm
Runtime: 50 minutes
Free Admission

The late street photographer Vivian Maier is the shutterbug of the moment. Born in New York in 1926, raised in France, and living and working as a nanny in Chicago for 40 years, the reclusive Maier was secretly a prolific, self-taught photographer who documented life in the Windy City for decades. But her thousands of stunning pictures were never shown during her lifetime and, in fact, were only discovered after her 2009 death. A selection of Maier’s work will be seen in the show “Vivian Maier: Out of the Shadows,” 1/10-2/23 at the Cleveland Print Room Dead Link Removed and her work is currently featured in the Akron Art Museum’s Fred and Laura Ruth Bidwell Gallery.

This screening is sponsored by Herb Ascherman.

In answer to a few off line questions.

Please bring your owns drink, hard or soft.

Since people usually arrive at different times on Friday we will probably order pizza in. We have had good luck with Teressa’s Pizza 4174 Wheatly Rd. Richfield, OH – tel: 330-659-9555. Friday nights they usually take 15-20 minutes. Anyone coming from North or the OH Turnpike has to drive by them to get to the house. Call ahead and pickup as you go by.

Keep in the back of your mind that if you need a darkroom for all the usual reasons, mine is available.

Actually that's my plan! I aim to be there around 8:00-8:30pm on the Friday.

That will probably make it easier on you, coming by Cleveland after the rush hour.
Did I mention the Pizza Toll Booth at the he'd of the driveway?

Sadly this year I wasn't able to get that whole Friday off work (but I do have the Monday off so I'll be camping over Sunday night if you're OK with that), so I won't be able to leave until about 3pm that night.

I will have payment for the pizza toll! lol.
