It is warm, sunny and breezy in North East Ohio today and an old man’s fancy again turns to seeing friends, shooting film, gathering together to see winter and spring’s work, climbing ledges, walking the OH & Erie Canal, photographing waterfalls and having group fun at a gathering of like minded friends and hopefully new faces.

My wife Dolly, the girls two blond lady Labrador Retrievers and I would like to invite you to our home for a photography gathering starting about 5 PM Friday July 16, Saturday July 17 and Sunday July 18th. We have been doing this, 5-6 times a year, for about two years with attendance ranging from 10-25 photographers. It has been a blast for us. I hope you have enjoyed it as much. For more information about the flavor of these events read the thread on the just completed May, 2010 event, some 200 posts at this writing.
(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

The following is boiler plate based on earlier experiences.
Available options we have enjoyed before will be in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park,
http://www.nps.gov/cuva/index.htm

Within five miles:
Blue Hen Falls http://gowaterfalling.com/waterfalls/bluehen.shtml
Buttermilk Falls http://gowaterfalling.com/waterfalls...milkCUVA.shtml
Brandywine Falls http://gowaterfalling.com/waterfalls/brandywine.shtml
Virginia Kendall Ledges
http://hikingohioparks.com/virginia-kendall-park-hiking-ohio-parks.html
Everett Road Covered Bridge
http://www.nps.gov/cuva/historyculture/everett-road-covered-bridge.htm
Maps http://www.nps.gov/cuva/planyourvisit/maps.htm

If nature/landscape is not your thing, Cleveland, the flats, where it is difficult to take a picture with less than three bridges, and five is more likely, awaits you.

A photography exhibit several of us are awaiting will be at the Akron Art Museum.
“Detroit Disassembled: Photographs by Andrew Moore”
http://www.akronartmuseum.org/exhibitions/details.php?unid=1499

The event will be in Bath, Ohio, between Cleveland and Akron, five miles south of the Ohio Turnpike and Route I-77, meeting at a private home, two miles from the edge of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. For a rough estimate of distance use zip 44286 in Mapquest.com. If some visitors want to camp by the garden, they are most welcome. Others can stay at local motels. The Hampton Inn, Richfield, OH (1 800 Hampton) at the OH Turnpike entrance and intersection with I-77, about five miles away is the most popular.

Come as early as Friday, 5:00 PM. We usually have coffee & rolls each morning at 10:00 AM to allow for early shooters and late sleepers. We gather again about 5:00 PM to show prints, tell lies and go out to dinner. Sunset shooting is available, but previously showing prints and telling stories prevailed. While you are here the Lady Labradors will entertain with their splashing stick routines. One regular will try to convince you that bacon ice cream is a bit of heaven. There is an orchard-home made ice cream business near by. When we learn how many are coming we can order a porta potty if there are enough to pay for it by contribution ($112). Our home stumbles through on an ancient septic system and well so we must ask you to endure this porta potty inconvenience.

We are trying to have a loose organizational shell under which all cats may be comfortably herded. The plan will evolve until the majority is happy and the protesters fall asleep.

All film shooters are welcome. Who is interested in coming? What information is needed?

If you have not been here before please PM me with name, address, phone, email and emergency contact in case you do something you shouldn’t have. I will return with directions.

Welcome to the Powers’ house.
Hosts, John & Dolly Powers
Labradors: Cindy and Savannah

John, since I saw you were doing more 8x10, I wondered what lens focal lengths you are currently favoring in that format.

Also, do you use a bag bellows with the 150mm (or any other lens) on the Phillips?

Dale,

I have shot 90% 8x10 since the first of the year for my UAkron photo course. What seems strange to me, but may not to others, is that my favorite lens on both 8x10 and 7x17 is a 12” Dagor in an Acme #4 shutter.

On both cameras I use as large as a 600mm. I think both bellows will go out to 725mm (not positive on that). I use a 250 wide field Ektar on both, but with only a small amount of movement on the 7x17. I can, but rarely, use the 150mm on the 8x10. I had a Schneider 210mm HM that worked well on the 8x10 with some movement (356mm I think on 8x10s 313mm). I traded it on a 210mm SSXL. That came in a suitcase, was too much trouble to move around, so I sold it. Unfortunately that left me without a 210mm of any sort.

On both my Phillips cameras the bellows is fixed. I can use the 150mm on the 8x10 with the standard bellows.

Hi John,
Put the July gathering on the schedule. Will see if I can work it in. Sue and I will be going to Charleston the last week of July so a final determination has not yet been made.

Had such a great time up there in May that it might be a hard thing to keep me away. Have you got a fall time set yet. That I could throw a 93% certainty at showing while the July is 50/50 now. (I am the 50% want to go and Sue is iffy due to the travel costs and all at the end of the month.)

Will keep you posted and will ping ya all once I get some prints of the stuff I shot this last time. I really want to get over and do some more work at the ledges.

Question??? When were folks going to go to the Akron Museum to see the print exhibit? That was something I really do hope to see.

Careful, I swear photographing there is addicting!

I agree it could be, I enjoyed being there, I have a great love of mountains and rock formations. It really looked like a gem of a place to do some macro work too. Everything seemeed to have a soft layer of moss and other forms of living covering on it. I have a Nikon Macro for my N80 camera that I have not touched for some time and a macro tube for the Hassy I have never used before.

I might be talking myself into a close encounter

Lee,

So glad you enjoyed the visit. That is the pleasure of having these events, the excitement of everyone enjoying the hobby and people that are so close to us, each excelling in his own way.

My guess and hope is that there will be a Fall event, but no date or related events have been selected.

Hope you can come to the July event. No idea yet which day we will look at the museum, weather and the wishes of those attending will be a big factor. When you are host you see that people make plans to come. For some things happen and their plans change. Two who wanted to come last time had to cancel. Arrival and departure times for those who can come change. Being a guest at two of Bill Schwab’s much larger gathering taught me that you can drive yourself nuts trying to schedule people who won’t or can’t be scheduled. That is why I put the statement in the boiler plate, “We are trying to have a loose organizational shell under which all cats may be comfortably herded. The plan will evolve until the majority is happy and the protesters fall asleep.”

Looking forward to seeing your prints soon and both of you in July if you can make it.

The girls and I hiked there and at the Octagon House trail yesterday, about four miles. It is just beautiful early in the morning, lots of mist and one other person running.

....and then Shawn has not even taunted you with Nelson Kennedy Ledges yet. When you see the roots hanging down a cliff edge thirty feet, or a giant four foot mushroom in a tree, you will be dazzled. As I said in earlier posts, it is like Angkor Wat Cambodia without the temples, dysentery, airfare or heat.

I have put this on my calendar and am looking forward to it.

With all this talk about the various ledges, perhaps that can be a destination that is part of the weekend.

I am also looking forward to being present for more of the print show and tell. Shawn, I hope you bring your photo box again. I have got some really nice color shots this spring on Ektar 100, so bring your sunglasses!

Thanks for sharing you lens preferences.

I see you have had the "XL" experience

I don't know if you are familiar with that Angulon 210mm but I totally overlooked it, thinking it was just a bigger version of the 90mm Angulon. I was way wrong, the 210 Angulon has a big 382mm image circle.

I'd be up for going to Nelson Ledges. I have actually never been there (other than to go to the race track of the same name  ).

Will do. I spent several nights the last week mounting prints so I have MANY more to share! =)

And the sunglasses will be packed - looking foward to seeing them, Jeff.

.

No, I am not familiar with it, only the door stop Super Angulon, and that only from trying to lift one that normally lives on a 12x20.

I finally took my new GPS Tom-Tom for a ride today. 'We' went to the Hoden Arboretum in Kirtland. I can't begin to tell you what a relief it is to have a co-pilot telling me when to make the turns etc. I feel like the door has been unlocked on my insecurity and I can go where ever i feel the urge. The Arboretum was amazing even though I didn't get there till 45mins before closing. (But the GPS didn't have the "bridge out" warnings, so I did have to make a detour. It kept saying 'turn around where possible... turn around where possible... etc. with an English accent. so charming!) I wonder if anyone down your way would be interested in a meetup over there. Somewhere down the road.

I'm looking forward to the next gathering as well, at your house John. And now I can't get lost, can I!

Boy can you pick the weekends! Eva & I will be at her brother's wedding and can't make it. Trust me, I would rather be in Ohio ... We'll definitely make it down soon though.

BTW - our friend Andrew Moore has his gallery show opening this weekend at the Akron Art Museum.

Congratulations Dorothy. Trust me! You will never get lost again. You will just have what Dolly and her mother call one minute vacations. Sometimes they are a little longer.

I don't think Holden will welcome the girls, but I'll give it a try some time if you like. I don't know the place though I have been told it is beautiful. Think about when.

Bummer. I scheduled it then as it is the weekend the Midwest LF Asylum travels. Sorry. I didn't know Eva's brother would go a get married. The nerve of him.

Come on down anytime you want to camp out and go see the show.
