It is time again for another NE OH Gathering, to get out shooting film, come together to see recent work, climb ledges, walk the OH & Erie Canal, photograph waterfalls and have group fun at a gathering of like minded friends and hopefully new faces.

Dolly, the Girls two blond lady Labrador Retrievers and I would like to invite you to our home for a film photography gathering starting 5 PM Friday, August 5th, through Saturday, August 6th and Sunday, August 7th. We have been doing this, 5-6 times a year, for four years with attendance ranging from 10-25 photographers. It has been a blast for us. I hope you have enjoyed it as much or will try it for the first time at this event. For more information about the flavor of these events read the threads on earlier "NE OH Gathering."

Lee L has built a Google Mapbook with most of our previously visited locations. I hope he will be kind enough to post a link to access his very helpful work.

The following is boiler plate based on earlier experiences.
Available options we have enjoyed in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park,
http://www.nps.gov/cuva/index.htm

Within five miles:
Blue Hen Falls http://gowaterfalling.com/waterfalls/bluehen.shtml
Buttermilk Falls http://gowaterfalling.com/waterfalls...milkCUVA.shtml
Brandywine Falls http://gowaterfalling.com/waterfalls/brandywine.shtml
Please note the obvious, waterfalls can be dangerous. The day after our last event a person unknown to us slipped and fell sixty feet to his death at Brandywine Falls.

Virginia Kendall Ledges http://hikingohioparks.com/virginia-kendall-park-hiking-ohio-parks.html
Everett Road Covered Bridge
http://www.nps.gov/cuva/historyculture/everett-road-covered-bridge.htm
Maps http://www.nps.gov/cuva/planyourvisit/maps.htm
Several visitors have been interested in the OH Turnpike bridge over the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the three 19th century churches in the scenic little town of Peninsula, OH.

There is often fog early in the morning in the Cuyahoga River Valley and locally over our pond. This can be natural or self induced depending on the persons. It can add interesting aspects to your photography. Some have slept in for four years and never noticed. It is your decision.

If nature/landscape is not your thing, Cleveland, the flats, where it is difficult to take a picture with less than three bridges, and five is more likely, awaits you.
“The Ohio & Erie Canal was a technological marvel. The inland waterway incorporated a series of sandstone locks that enabled boats to climb differences in elevation along the Continental Divide. The steepest section of the canal was between Akron and the Little Cuyahoga River. In a single mile, 15 locks, or "steps," were necessary.” http://www.summitmetroparks.org/parksandtrails/TowpathTrail.aspx

The event will be in Bath, Ohio, between Cleveland and Akron, five miles south of the intersection of the Ohio Turnpike and Route I-77, meeting at a private home, two miles from the edge of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. For a rough estimate of distance use zip 44286 in Mapquest.com. If some visitors want to camp by the garden, they are most welcome. Others can stay at local motels. The Hampton Inn, Richfield, OH (1 800 Hampton) at the OH Turnpike entrance and intersection with I-77, about five miles away is the most popular.

Come as early as Friday, 5:00 PM. We usually go out to breakfast at 10:00 AM to allow for early shooters and late sleepers. We gather again about 5:00 PM to show prints, tell lies and go out to dinner. Sunset shooting is available, but previously showing prints and telling stories prevailed. It is all about the camaraderie of people following a hobby. While you are here the Lady Labradors will entertain with their splashing stick routines. One regular attendee will try to convince you that bacon ice cream is a bit of heaven. There is an orchard-home made ice cream business near by. Quality control visits and inspection checks are mandatory, often requiring multiple tests.

When we learn how many are coming we can order a porta potty if there are enough to pay for it by contribution ($112). Our home stumbles through on an ancient septic system and well so we must ask you to endure this porta potty inconvenience. We understand new ones are about $20K.

We are trying to have a loose organizational shell under which all cats may be comfortably herded. The plan will evolve until the majority is happy and the protesters fall asleep.

All film shooters are welcome. Who is interested in coming? What information is needed?

If you have not been here before please PM me with name, address, phone, email and emergency contact in case you do something you shouldn’t have. I will return with directions. If you have been here before but have new emergency contacts please update them.

Welcome to the Powers’ house.
Hosts, John & Dolly Powers
Labradors: Cindy and Savannah

The web page with resources for the NE OH Gatherings is at:

https://sites.google.com/site/neohapug/

It has maps of favorite shooting areas, restaurants, hotels, and links to park and museum web sites and weather web info.

Let me know if you want anything added and I'll do what I can.

Looking forward to seeing everyone. Thanks to John and Dolly for hosting.

Thank you Shawn. Kind words.

Jeff, I saw your post after Photostock, saying that we should do this every month. That was my thought after my first N MI Gathering - now Photostock. This is my attempt to comply.

Hope you, Shawn, Jeff both and more importantly Eva, can come.

I think being a photographer is just an excuse for us all to get together and eat.

I think I can convince Eva to come along - there will be ice cream involved, right?

PS: We just came back from a Country Maid Ice Cream store inspection. White House Cheery and Peach are currently up to standard.

How about bacon?

Charlie, you have to come to make the coffee.

Last time Charlie made us a kind gift of a coffee grinder, brought roasted beans, prepared coffee for the group, got us addicted and then said, "by the way you have to buy a $200 coffee roaster and a new $200+ coffee maker.

Jeff, if Charlie doesn't volunteer, I'll send you that big mooring chain in the garage and a shotgun to coax him to come make coffee for us, and shoot pictures and show and tell.

John,

I don't yet know if I will be able to make it ... I certainly would like to.

However, if I am not able to make it down for this one, I could possibly send some coffee down with Jeff & Eva.

But I have to say for the record, I am bit concerned by your statement about pushing quality coffee makers and roasters. I don't want to be perceived as some kind of coffee pimp or pusher. If in fact I were some kind of "dealer" or "pusher" or something I would technically be trying to get you hooked on the coffee beans and then sell them when you needed more. I may know people, who know people though...

Hope to see you, will let you know.
Charlie

John,

If you've got the shakes clearly you have been having too much caffeine, maybe you should try some decaf? I can hook you up with that too...

Charlie

And Jeff,

I still think your idea of bacon ice cream is genius, best of both worlds.

I don't have my schedule yet, but if I'm available I'll be there. I did a lot of 35mm shooting and printing the last 2 months. I'll have to tell you all about my chance meeting with my favorite photographer.

I'm late posting to this thread because every time I read the words "Bacon Ice Cream" the retching disturbs my typing....

Dale,

You will be okay. Try to stay in control. Hope your schedule works out. Please pass the info on to Bill Jones if he is not reading Apug.

Oh how I wish I could join you all. I believe that is the weekend we have a family reunion going on and we decided to go it at Hocking Hills State Park this year. (love that place).

Will hope to catch the next gathering, they are always fun. I should have some great prints of Sue's and my trip to Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. It was just beautiful, filled with misty fishing towns, incredible landscapes, sailing ships and more.

Hope some of you can join us as we go to Rickett's Glen for 22 waterfalls in September 23, 24 & 25.
