I might try again

Already entered in 2007 and 2008 but I havent got a decent portrait for 2009 yet. What baffles me is that most of the winners hold degrees and MA in photography I wonder if non photography educated people will ever have a chance to go throught the panel?

Blimey ..... the entry fee is £18 PER PHOTOGRAPH !! I guess this is why the overall winner takes 12 grand though.

The print size seems odd to me. It says, "no smaller than 420x297mm". Tell me if I'm wrong, but I see that would be 11.69x16.5354". Is that right? That's an unusual size, do you think?

I should imagine that just the exposure if worth the £18 investment for those participating.

Following on Rachele's comment, at last year's exhibition I realized how restrictive my conception of portraiture was. Very often, it is not so much about the person being portraited, but more about a statement or a wider view over social interactions and the environment. I thought that it was interesting.

The last time I went it seems to be a requirement to have a sneering, disappointment, surly looking and unwashed subject.

This might be a reaction against the candy apple smile that most people associate with Portraits but they did nothing for me.

The photographic portraits I like were done by photographers such as Cecil Beaton

BTW Sotherbys’ have a Beaton exhibition on until Saturday - http://www.chrisbeetles.com/gallery/exhibition_detail.php?id=1050
