I have just acquired a Nagel 6x9 camera. The only clue to a model number is a 10 stamped on the leather carrying strap. It came with Nagel, Voigtlander and A P plate holders. I'm just wondering if sheet film holders were ever available for these cameras.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Pete.

Hello.

I haven't been able to find much for sheet film holders being available but you can use the plate holders with sheet film. You have to use a piece of some stiff material to back the film up, though. Plastic or metal are commonly mentioned for this. From what I can gather you want it to be about 1/16 of an inch thick.

You can get a roll film holder for 120, also. Rada and Rollex both made film holders that fit these. I am assuming all the plate holders that came with it fit it. These come up on eBay from time to time. The Rada holders are easier to fix than the Rollex ones if the light seal has gone out on it.

Best of luck

Thanks for your help Brian. Apart from a bit of rust, which I can handle, the holders are not too bad and the light seals look good.
I didn't know about the roll film holders that will fit so I'll look out for one and sheet film holders.
Thanks again.

One thing to watch out for in your searching; The plate holders (or film holders if you find any) are pretty specific to the camera. Even though they all look similar, the edge profiles are different between makers and they don't interchange well, if at all.

Ian Grant who hopefully will find the thread and elaborate, has done a lot of work in identifying all the different profiles.

Hello.

Just some other notes.

If you have problems with the velvet where the dark slide goes (or where the plate holder slides on to the back of the camera), it is often due to it being matted down after sitting for eighty years. It actually helps quite a bit to take a very soft paint brush and brush it back into the correct form (standing more on end). Also, when doing that, leave the dark slide out for a while to let it relax.

One other note. If you get 5X7 sheet film it can be slit right in four to 2-1/2 by 3-1/2 which fits into these holders. If you get the ortho-litho from Freestyle it comes to about nine cents an image.

I just bought some AP plate holders that had little sheet metal frames to slide the sheet film into. This must have been sold as an alternative for the plates. If you want, I can make detail drawings of these so you can copy them.

Thanks for your offer Brian but I'll look out for film holders and the inserts that you mentioned. We have regular camera fairs over here and I do see a lot of old holders for sale. As I've only recently obtained the camera I've never taken much notice of them.
Thanks also for the advice on the plate holder light traps and the film, 5x7 is pretty much my favourite format.
