N/F80 with 50/1.8???

I just got a Nikkor 50/1.8 AF non-D lens. It works properly on my F100, N8008S (manual aperture), D7000 and D700. On my N80, the FEE message shows up and it can't be used in any mode. What is strange is my AFD and (one G) lenses work normally on the N80. I have double checked that the aperture ring is locked on 22, cleaned the body and lens contacts. From what I have tried, it seems that both the body and lens are OK. What have I missed? Any help is appreciated.

Did you load a new roll of film recently? Almost every time I get an FEE message it's because I didn't get the leader long enough to advance the film.

I think I had a similar problem on my N90X. I think I reset the camera, and that worked. The previous owner must have set up something weird with one of those secretary things. I had to hold a couple buttons down for five or ten seconds. Maybe yours has something similar.

I tried reloading with a test roll with no success. I think it is a mis-match with the lens mount/contact pins. If I rotate the lens very slightly, F-- shows in the lcd screen. This, even in A mode, and camera is still in-op. Luckily the camera is usable with other lenses. Just a puzzlement to me. Thanks for your input.

According to Ken Rockwell's Nikon lens compatibility chart, the 50/1.8 AF non-D should be fine with an N-80/F-80.

There were some threads I found with the same issue with that camera and lens. The most plausible explanation is that the body doesn't realize the lens is set to the minimum aperture of f/22 - the mechanical tolerances between that particular lens and that particular body might be such that there's a slight misalignment. I would check for any looseness in the seating of the lens and check that when at f/22 the ring has no play.

^^^ Agree with your thoughts on the above. There is the slightest bit of play in the locked aperture ring. Even getting a bit physical with ring and lens itself, the FEE is still active. I do think it is a tolerance issue with the body and this particular lens as other combo's of lens bodies are normal.

I have a similar problem with an AF non-D 28mm Nikkor.
It works fine on an F100 but unlike my other non-D AF lenses such as the 50mm 1.4 it won't work on my D90 unless the lens is turned slightly on the mount - no longer locked in place - and then usable only in manual mode.
Perhaps the contacts are dirty or some internal misalignment?

^^^ This is the same situation as mine. With the lens just barely off locked position, it works in manual mode. Focus confirm indicator works. To my mind, it has to be a tolerance issue between this body and lens. I wonder which pin identifies minimum aperture?
