So, my wife hit a jackpot at the casino last night for $4,000 and gave me $1,000 of her winnings that she says I have to spend on photo stuff - what a dilema.

Right now, I'm thinking on getting my 19" RD Artar put in a shutter. Or, I could go for a soft focus portait lens, but which one? Anyone want to sell a P&S cheap? Yeah, I know that they're worth more than that, but I can still dream.

Any suggestions (other than to send you the money and you'll spend it for me)?

Bank it for a rainy day. There'll come a day when it will come in handy, like for a special trip with loads of photo ops.

If you're looking ahead, buying film would be a safe investment if you have freezer space. Film isn't apt to get cheaper with rising metal prices and less eventual competition.

For soft focus, a verito or kodak portrait would be nice for <$1000. Come to the Russ Young / Tillman Crane soft focus class next month and try out a whole bunch of different ones if you are seriously curious.

For rolleiflexes (yes, a nice thing to have and use), I'm happy with my $200-300 tessar equipped model.

Banking it for a rainy day or taking a trip - my wife says that isn't allowed. This is found money, not saved money - I'm supposed to spend it.

Workshops - they don't have hardly any here in southern California. However, the Russ Young/Tillman Crane workshop looks extremely intriguing. I only wish is wasn't all the way across the country.

A Rollieflex - I haven't used medium format film for over 20 years. Those size negs seem so tiny next to an 8 x 10 or 8 x 20.

Eddie - where do you think she is taking the rest of her winnings? She did put some away, but the rest is for budgeting her money for more trips back to the casino for future gambling - she loves the slots and the casino is only 5 minutes away. Fortunately, she does surprizingly well at them.

Sirious - she always keeps telling me the I'm the lucky one when she came along!

Ron - she has two sisters. However, they're from Green Bay and I can't see cheese heads and Long Island mixing well together. You also would have to convert to "Packerism".

John- thanks for the suggestion on the Wollensak soft focus portrait lenses. I discussed with Chris and we both agreed that the 16" Vitax is much too heavy for my Deardorf, otherwise I would loved to have one. Maybe I need to look for a studio camera!

Dan- keep an eye out for the Kodak Portrait meniscus lens - the 305mm version fits in a #5 Ilex shutter, so it will go just fine on your Deardorff. Even if the glass is heavy, most of it is behind the lensboard, not far in front like the Vitax, so there's no worries about it developing momentum and removing the front standard from the camera.

So far, I've ordered two of Reinhold's meniscus lenses, so I still have over $800 left. What to spend it on????? I tried to talk Jim Fitzgerald out of his Darlot brass cannon, but he says it will be burried with him in his coffin when the time comes.

Got the two lenses from Reinhold today - a 135mm and a 285mm. Great workmanship and a great deal for the price. Can't wait to head out and try them out.
