Mine hummed...then light flickered. I was informed it is probably a bad bulb..I haven't replaced yet to confirm though.

I used to work in "pro" labs, and have been around any number of these things. They all hum, but some more than others. The one I have now hums, but not enough that I can't drown it out with the stereo. Dean

a loud humm means the ballast in the starter is going. It can be replaced. A low level hum is just the voltage going through the tube.

Hi Jeffrey,
I am new to the group. Can you say a bit more about the ballast in the starter. I see what looks like an induction coil inside as it resembles a transformer but I know it’s stepping up the voltage for the bulb. I see a socket. I see the bulb which is now fully up to color, but where is the starter you speak of and where can things like the coil( ballast?) and starter be obtained. I believe Thomas closed out production long ago. Thanks for you input.
Sincerely
Marc

You hum it; I will sing it.

I 'disposed' of my Thomas paper fogger some months ago.
Now use two Paterson safe lights.
