Cartier-Bresson? I think I probably was – in fact, lets be honest – of course I was! But I don't think it's true anymore. In fact I tend to be influenced by the last interesting picture I've seen, whether it's in a magazine, a gallery, on flickr, wherever. I find an extraordinary variety of things other than photography influence me too - painting, sculpture, television.
What I hope I do is skim the cream off all of these sources and use it subconsciously. I do try to make sure I only look at good pictures so that they are the ones that leave a mark. It's very easy to be lured by some crappy fashionable technique.
Recently on flickr I've been looking at self-portraits that people are making with digital cameras - the best of them are wonderfully relaxed and frank.
The stuff about Bresson always using a 50mm and never cropping is tosh, by the way. I do it because it's a restriction I deliberately impose on myself that helps me concentrate, that's all. I do discuss this in the introduction to Vol.1, which you can read on
