.....when was the last time you older (older in experience, not years) Guys or Gals made this mistake.?
It is funny how you can trick yourself into thinking everything is OK.
This was the first time i used my OM1n. I have owned it for quite awhile, but it spent the last 4 months at Camtech...waiting its turn to be put straight.
I usually pay pretty strict attention when i load film...gently take up the slack...and watch the rewind knob to make sure it moves with the film advance lever. I just did not do that this time. I DID watch the film wind onto the take-up spool, and then i closed the back.
I assume the film went one time around, and then the leader probably popped out of the slit in the spool. After that, i was simply turning the film counter each time but Not Advancing the film.
Then, after i had "Shot" 36 frames, i hit the Rewind Switch. At first, There was SOME tension as there was that first few inches of film on the spool, but that quickly went slack.
In my ultimate wisdom, i attributed THAT ease of rewinding to my newly restored OM1 being a Very Smooth piece of gear.
I am about 30% through a Photography class at my local college. This roll was for our Light Assignment......Light/Reflection/Long Exposure/Sun and Shadow/Harsh, Spot, Weak, Soft.....the idea was to show lots of different light(ing) scenarios. The Quality of the composition, or an interesting composition was not important. I was really looking forward to this one. I do not have much artistic ability, but i managed to scrape up some "Artsy Fartsy" frames this time.....and i blew it.
Definitely have to show this roll to my teacher.
"Fortunately" i have a one week reprieve. Half of Northern California is on fire, and the college is being used as temporary housing for all, the Poor People and their pets that have been burned out of their homes. Not sure yet when the school WILL be opened.
I was at the college today, using up the last 3-4 frames of this roll, and then loading another roll (Properly this time) and shooting several frames of all the people that are camped out in the different parts of the school.
Prayers to all that can use a kind word.....Good Luck

Sorry to hear about the terrible fires. I hope they can be brought under control.

I have to confess that your experience has happened to me, more than once, over the years. If you take up the slack with the rewind knob then you will see the rewind knob move when you wind on. This is a useful check that the film is secure on the take up spool (but you know this anyway).

Sorry for you, it's never the right moment...

Somebody from "Tendance floue" did the same, on purpose, for a celebration of the collective's nth birthday.
Do the same and tell you teacher that the lighting WAS great :D

I won't -strictly speaking- offer prayers to the "refugees" in your college as I'm not a believer, but my thoughts are every day with all the people in a bad situation around the Globe.

Yes. Be glad you did actually expose the film but "Fix" it before you "developed" it. Both aggravating lessons. Bill Barber

Its worse when you hike 3+ miles uphill to capture a grand landscape on your last single sheet and forget to pull the darkslide and don't realize it until you process.

Sounds annoying but is it really worse to mess up one photograph compared to 36?

No problem my friend. It is the Consideration/Intent that is important.
It has become a phrase that we use without thinking about it, i suppose.
I am Both a Closet Catholic and a Closet Atheist......so offering "Prayers" is always a struggle for me.
Lets just wish for Help And Good Luck.....to those that deserve it.

In 2002 I took some of the most spectacular scenic shots I've ever taken, shooting from the train as we traveled between Rome and Venice. And in my Canon A-1 it wasn't unusual to get 37 shots -- but 39? no way! Fortunately I got it rethreaded in time to get a few towards the end of the train ride -- and seemed to have less trouble remembering to check that rewind knob during the first few advances during the remainder of the trip.

Best of luck out there with all the fires -- that's bad stuff.

OH Yeah, I've been there, I've also had sheet film that I didn't load properly fall out of the holder into the bellows of the camera. 120 not so much, must be harder to screw up?

I'm a believer, the Holy Spirit is all around me, helped me to cut out beer. Of course I also am pretty sure I believe in Santa Claus too  . Anyway I'm a big believer in Prayer. And I have watched in horror at what is going on. I've spent quite a bit of time in California, such a beautiful place.

Not sure there's a more beautiful place than the Golden Gate, The Presidio , Muir Woods..........

Stay safe, I'll be praying. Best Regards, Mike

Happened to me a while ago, I went to Bouley Bay, a small harbour on our north coast, and took the first Retina I bought, a 1b, and it was just one of those days when the light was great, every thing came together to get some magical shots, so I started shooting, as most of you know, the Retina's stop at 36, so 36 carefull exposures later the winder would not move, so I wound the film back, only to find that the film was feeling lighter than normal to wind back, I had failed to load the film correctly, got home and could not wait to see the lovely negatives I must have on this film, so went to unload the film from the camera, it was all back in the cassette, something I never do, anyway, in the dark I got the top off, and struggled to cut the leader off, loaded it into my tank and developed it, washed it and took it out, blank, It turned out, after I had finished cursing the camera and the shutter for not working that I found the camera fine, shutter fine and looking at the leader I realised I had not loaded the film into the retina correctly, These days, I always check that the rewind knob turns when firing off the first 2 blank shots,
Richard

Nothing like driving 400 miles to Yosemite and realize that you left all your 8x10 film holders and film in a bag in the university parking lot. Fortunately a custodian picked them up for me -- and I shot MF that trip.

Oh but of course. It’s amazing how superior LF photographers think themselves. That is exactly the kind of response I was expecting.
Well, if one does not want to get wet, then pissing into the wind is not advised.

I've done something slightly different
Reloaded a roll that I had partially exposed back into my Nikon fe2. Turn turn the shutter to 1/4000, and set lens to f16 with cap on, fire the required shots....and forgot to put the camera back on to AE...

Shot 18 frames at 1/4000 f16 indoors

Svenedin, let me hazard a guess about the "large format bias." LF photographers have more to screw up. I speak from experience! That's not something to be proud of. When you have lugged your heavy gear a long distance, gotten the light, composition, focus, location etc right it's really painful when you find you've left the shutter open or forgotten to pull the dark slide or double exposed the sheet. Or left your holders at home. Ouch. You get the picture.

I am not who you were addressing, but........Was the "Holocaust" of WWII worse than what befell other peoples at other times.?
There is nothing gained by "Comparing" disasters.....it is All Bad. My 35mm Olympus is light, and film is cheap compared to 8x10. Then again, i burned THIRTY SIX FRAMES.

Quite so. I was reacting to what I perceived as LF snobbishness. It seemed we were somehow supposed to feel more sorry for the poor LF photographer who lost one picture as compared to the OP 35mm photographer who lost a whole roll. I really don't care how heavy LF camera gear is or how expensive the film is. There are plenty of film formats to choose from and nobody is forced to use LF.

Weird. I'm certainly not saying one is worse than another! My goodness, it is unfortunate you lost a roll. I've lost a few myself over the years.

Are LF'ers snobs? Some probably are, undoubtedly there must be small format snobs too. I shoot 35mm, 120, and various sizes of sheet film. I enjoy them all. None is "better" than another. Some formats take more time to make an image, that's all-- it's not a value judgement. Different flavors of the same thing-- enjoying the process of making pictures.

Sorry you lost your roll dude.
