My first few rolls of film!

Well I got my first film camera (Fuji G617) a little under 3 weeks ago and since, I have shot and had developed 3 rolls of film.

I headed to Stanthorpe with my son and wife a few days after I got the camera so I tested it out there. I also did a Brisbane City sunrise. Here are 5 of the shots. To my surprise I only really stuffed up 2 exposures. One of them I knew I had stuffed up as I didn't know how to use my cable release properly and the other one I just under-exposed as it was fairly early in the morning.

Can't really go wrong with Velvia. That film is sex embodied in emulsion form.

You mentioned in your blog you looked forward to see how much detail is in the scans: well Velvia 50 @ 160lp/mm is extremely capable. Lets say you only pull 80lp/mm out of that though (which is probably a reach) and are targeting around 4kdpi as a resolution to use for scanning:

2 * 80lp/mm * 25.4mm/inch = 4064dpi

4064^2 * (60 * 170)/25.4^2 / 1024^2 = 250Mpx

So if you had a 4kdpi scanner, scanning at 16 bits a channel, you'd be looking at around 250 million pixels, for a total file size of 1500MB each.

Velvia regularly bests even the best scanners out there. In order to extract all this information you'd have to use a drum scanner. But keep this in your mind for the next time someone asks how it rates next to digital.

Thanks for all of the comments. Thanks for the calculations on the file sizes too. I will have to look into getting a scanner myself I think, but for now I think I'll just get out there and photograph! Unfortunately the price of film in Australia has sky-rocketed as the Australian dollar has lost 10% over the last 6 or 8 weeks.

I'll keep posting after I take more images and scan them.

I'd use Freestyle. AUS and NZ have been price gouging on film for the last 5-7 years or so. They've love it if you'd just stop using that "old crap" and picked up a shiny new digital camera that their Japanese trade agreements benefit from.
