My Catlabs X80 Vs Panatomic X Video

Braxus Photography Fun: Catlabs X80 vs Panatomic X Films - YouTube

Did another video on my Youtube channel comparing these two films. Take a look if interested. What I noticed was the Catlabs X80 film had a darker look to it with darker tones then Pan X. Pan X had brighter tones and more mid tones. So even the Catlabs claims this film is similar to Pan X, it may be close, but still not enough to say they are the same. Its a 9 min video, so jump ahead to 7:25 to see the pictures. Let me know what you guys think.

I like it. Your images are fantastic, even the OOF one.

Skipped through it. Box speed? I’ve never shot PanX and CatLab only in 4x5. My impression is roughly consistent with your assessment.

I was very happy with CatLabs 80 even though it only vaguely resembles Pan X.

I shot both rolls at 32 ISO. Catlabs is known to be underexposed at box speed, so to keep things consistent, I shot both rolls at the same speed. Developed both together (which was a mistake) at Xtol 1:1 for 7 minutes. Pan X roll was slightly over developed and Catlabs was slightly underexposed. Id go so far and say X80 could be shot at 25 ISO. I wonder how Shanghai GP3 compares to X80? I have some of that as well.

Cool comparison.

I use X80 at box speed in bright light, I think it does well there.
It's a fun film. I develop mine in Eco-Pro replenished. 8:30 at 75F (ambient room)

Confused. You say you shot Catlabs at box speed, yet many on here recommend reducing ISO to prevent underexposure. I shot mine at 32 ISO. What are others doing with this film? I used Xtol 1:1.

I shot Cat80 4x5 at box speed, processed in DD-X 4+1 and got really rich negs. I wish I could find them to scan and show.

I really like catlabs 80 in 120. I usually dev it with either rodinal or d76 and I've gotten really nice results.

The speed issue has me really confused. I use a couple of different meters and, most often, either general-coverage reflected or incident meter. I can’t remember which I used but it most certainly was one or the other.

Box speed with a Pentax 645N.
I always start with that when getting new film I never used before and in this case I had no reason at all to change from ISO 80.
Depends on personal taste too.
But always shoot box speed first.
