I recently purchased a M4-2 from another forum member. For the last few years I have been using a Artist and Artisan half case on my M4 and decided to add one to the new camera as well. Order one from B&H and it arrived in record time. When I opened the box it had the musty smell of a leather product sitting in a damp warehouse for a long time. A smart person would have begun the return process immediately but I really don’t want to receive another copy that has been sitting in the same warehouse. The normal answer of letting it sit in a sunny window are on hold as our weather has thrown the switch and transitioned from unseasonably warm with plenty of sun to damp, dark and rainy. I’ve tried baking soda, vinegar, leather cleaner and even dryer sheets. Currently it’s in the dryer on a no heat cycle for a couple of hours. I know the smell will diminish with time and I will contact B&H but this is a great resource for stuff I haven’t tried.

Best thing I have used is a small ionizer/ozone generator. Put whatever in a box, outside, with the ionizer and seal it up. Come back the next day and Bob's your uncle... I had a camera that was musty and smelled of cigarettes. Fixed it when nothing else would.

Hope that helps...

Thanks for the suggestion. I rubbed it down with some Fabreeze and am going to let it sit in an open closet for a while.

I have had good luck getting rid of musty odors by putting the musty-smelling items in a closed box containing clean cat litter.

Important caveat:
Be sure to keep cats out of the box, or you will have other odor issues. 😸

As the one who cleans the litter box, there are odors a lot worse than a little musty!
I just spritzed the inside of the case with a little Fabreeze and rubbed the exterior with some leather conditioner. I'll let it sit for a few days and give an update. Thanks for the help!

B&H will take it back and will probably have the product representatives come in and inspect whatever stock is on hand. I'm sure they will work out a non-stinky replacement.

I cleaned our enormous litter box today. We have 3 litter boxes and 3 cats, they all seem to favor just the one. 🐈🐈‍⬛

I know they'll take it back, I'll keep it and ask for a refund. My efforts are starting to show progress, Kiwi No Buff Cream Polish for the exterior, a little Fabreeze for the interior and patience.

With all this effort, by the time the musty smell dissipates it will be a really soft and supple half case.

Our eighteen year old Ragdoll only uses one end of the box. I just don't think I want to chance leaving the case at the other end...

I decided it's not worth the effort since I can return it. Hopefully, the next one will have a pleasant scent
