MSA O/N January 2024 - "Decks"

Greetings! Thanks to @warden for the opportunity to host the MSA for January 2024. I’ve chosen, “Decks” as the theme. To clarify, let’s use this definition: An outdoor structure built from boards, capable of supporting weight, and supported by structural elements such as joists, beams, and posts.

I’m looking forward to seeing your work. Please remember to label images as “old” or “new”. I’d also like to know your choice of camera/ lens/film. Here are a few examples to get us started.

And an "Old" submission from 2014. Most likely Olympus OM with the 35mm f/2 on T-Max 400, expanded development in replenished HC-110:

Deck DANG !!!!!

A thought with a sigh. ... for a wish for and a concept in an illusion that cannot exist for me.

We live in the state of Arizona, many many miles away from a Pacific or Atlantic port, ... that could, ... would some old sailing vessels on display.

We could climb on board, ... and take an image similar to this one below from the internet. Then develop it and enter it for this Months Shooting Assignment, revealing a different reality of a Deck, ... not on land, but supported by by structural elements such as joists, beams, and posts that are floating on water.

peter. k., thank you for helping me realize that perhaps this theme is a bit too based on geographical location to participate. My bad, and apologies to everyone.

To clarify, where I live, outdoor wooden decks are one of the most popular structures used for creating social gathering places. They are commonly used in restaurants and around homes to create patio areas. And at the front of homes and buildings, wooden decks are used to create porches (e.g. my Nikon F2 image). This, not boats and ships, is what I had in mind.

So, let’s re-boot this theme and expand it to hopefully give everyone something to submit. What I want to see are pictures of outdoor patios and porches; places where people gather to sit and relax. Let’s throw out-of-the-mix what they are made of.

I hope this adapts the theme to be more universally inclusive for everyone.

New. Aviphot 200 cut down and loaded into a 126 cartridge shot in a Kodak Instamatic 124, printed on Ilford paper, but this is a phone photo of the print. My original jig to punch holes messed up and I had to punch them twice. It was too dark to expose the film at the 1/90 f11 the camera shoots at, so I overdeveloped quite a bit.

1950s Rolleicord TLR, 75mm f3.5 Xenar lens.
Kentmere 120 film, 100 rated at 50 ISO. 1/25th at f:11.5
Developed in D23 1:1 and printed on Ilford Multigrade IV RC, pearl paper.


New image: Lazy Days, on an early overcast afternoon.

@russljames: I really like the textural quality of these sets.

@MattKing: How far did you go with the development? I like the punchiness.

@skylight1b: Good setting. There's something about compressed tone scales I'm really liking.

@Don_ih: This is cool. I was watching a video not long ago with someone demonstrating a device that cuts 120 film down to 127. There was even a left over 16mm strip that was made while doing the cut. Cool to know that this can be done with other formats.

That was from a long time ago.
IIRC, most of the roll was exposed in very flat light, so it was my intention to develop it longer for moderately increased contrast. And I overdid it .
The resulting negatives suffer from that, except when printed or displayed for effect.
In addition, that is from a scanned negative, and the post-processing is a bit "over the top" when it comes to contrast.

Don, the contrast from the development has made this into something else, very nice.

Taken yesterday during some sketchy and windy weather in Philly. We've had flooding and downed trees. Took a while for my Yashicamat to dry out!

Hi Mick, it's the Benjamin Franklin bridge. Here's an image I made several years ago of the same bridge, and you can see the pier on the right hand side which is where I was standing for yesterday's image.

It's actually a bike I bought for my daughter but she hasn't expressed much interest in riding a bike (she's 9). Perhaps in the summer.

@What About Bob - My device for cutting this particular film is a sled that holds the 70 mm film with a 35mm guide bar sitting on top of it and I slice it with a utility knife.

I really like both of these, especially the deck at the side of the boathouse. The image entices me to stroll down that deck.

The reflection of the bridge in the foreground of this image is what my eye is drawn toward. Thanks for this excellent submission!
