MSA O/N January 2022: Your Favorite Things (2.0)

In September/October 2016 we had very active participation in Barbara Ann’s theme: “Your Favorite Things”. Let’s have a second round using that theme. In Barbara Ann’s words: “Show me YOUR FAVORITE THINGS. Whatever makes you feel better when things aren't going your way…”

· Submissions can be OLD prints/negatives that were taken earlier in the year (or prior)

· Submissions can be NEW prints/negatives taken during this month

Please label them accordingly.

(@ peter k. : Peter, I’m assuming that any OLD prints/negatives should not be the same ones previously submitted for this assignment? Please clarify for us. Thanks!)

Hahah ah ha ... as Matt said: "Probably best that it hasn't been used too recently." but he was referring to the theme, but your referring to the image, so yes, the old winner of this theme, in this case, Macfred cannot enter his winner for this theme back in 2016,



but if he wanted to he could renter his other two entries that didn't win, as one does not have to limit oneself to just one entry per theme.

Heck, now with old and new, one could enter as many as they liked, in fact the more the merrier.

Thanks for the reminder ! Good ol' days ... I really miss some of the members of yore - TheToadMen, Bertus, barbara ann, LAG ...

LAG may be still about, ... was last seen: Nov 18, 2021

but alas the others may be in image heaven ... and we to miss them and their fun comments and interaction, that's what were trying to start up again for MSA... Heck for those who are not familiar
with this, check out the posts from this past MSA link above.

That's a nice theme! And I agree with macfred that this subforum is quite friendly. For some reason many photography forums tend to be just the opposite.

Hmmm, this could be quite a challenge, of past, .. or the present!
And that can change in an instant!
Your out with your camera, and suddenly see a composition you never thought about before, and bang the process begins!
Ha, ... its 33* and cold here, .. and where comfortable in our cozy chair, but the sun is rising and man the best time to take some shots has always been the twilight zone of morning and evening dusk.

Actually, I am also in hibernation right now ...
But I promise -high and holy- to develop some roll films tomorrow that I have exposed since Christmas - there should also be something on the subject of the MSA.
Outside it is not very inviting at the moment - temperatures around freezing point and sleet ...

My favorite Trail ..
First entry: Favorite in operational use bridge, on 89a going north to Flagstaff, called Midgley Bridge.
.. AhHa, so ya know another shot of a dead bridge will be coming. ..

Know for its canyon views and trail heads up high to Wilson Mountain, and down low to Oak Creek that it flows by. A wonderful wilderness area just a few miles north of Sedona.
The canyon it spans, is named Wilson Canyon, after Richard Wilson who had an unfortunate meeting with a grizzly in 1885, that he wounded. and died in this canyon. Here's the story:

Here's a view of the trail further on, showing Wilson Mountain and its bench, the lower part, was created by the fault line break in its structure. Except for this location, of the mountain, Oak Creek flows and follows that fault line from the top of the Mongolian Rim, south of Flagstaff, down to the lower, flatter area of Sedona and the Verde Valley.

Wilson Mountain, with is benched is the highest mountain in Sedona, and provides excellent panoramic views of the area, but its quite a climb that me old legs cannot really do anymore, but been there and done that.

Boy this can be any category, and one that has been tickling in the back of the mind is my favorite tool, which is an old hand plane given to me by my Uncle in Connecticut as we stopped by on our way out to our military assigned radar site back in 1964. This was all the way cross country. on the California coast south west of San Jose, and is now for heavens sake is listed as a historical site. My goodness...

But boy what fun going all the way cross country for the first time, for the travel and the scenery was, .. an still in my memory, ... as one of my most favorite things we ever did, but alas, today, .. no pictures of mine survived of that trip or the site that we could enter under the category as an OLD.

We still have that plane, would it be appropriate to configure a posed image of that for this months theme?

Its going to be difficult, and not spontaneous, because it is a very versatile molding plane with multiple cutters, but so fun to use, as there is no noise to be heard when using it, but the pealing of the planed wood peeling off of its core. So setting it up to display it and make a portrait of it is going to be quite a challenge as we have never done an actual portrait of anything. Most of all my shots, even those that need a tripod at times, are spontaneous.
So ... Hee hawhhhh... wadda ya say?

Peter, I interpret Barbara Ann’s original theme to include any category of things that are special and favorite to you for some reason. So yes, a favorite tool most certainly fits the theme.

To avoid having to take a great deal of time to set it up, perhaps there might be a way to take pictures of small parts of it that can still allow viewers to recognize what it is without having to be fully assembled and framed in its entirety?

Just a thought to consider!

This old steamer (Stoomboot in Dutch) was photographed earlier this month.

One more to the show - I guess it was on New Year's day.
A sailing vessel almost 100 years old - photographed in the Blazerhaven Workum, Friesland / The Netherlands.

Oh love it, the wood work on it.
Hmmm making me think and would assume that back in the old days they had to used the old hand planes to make the junction laps on those wood planks.

I like that too. It's an Izh - or иж to be exact - from the early 1960's. It's an old soviet motorcycle. Two stroke, 350 cubic centimeters, sidecar etc. I bought it about seven years ago with no experience in fixing or maintaining old motors. It was in rusty pieces and it took a year to get it running. After that it has become more and more reliable as I've learned more skills. I ride in winter too.

I'm a humanist and interested in landscape and cultural heritage. Fixing and maintaining this kind of machine is really nice contrast to writing. It's a completely different world. But at the same time it's a very hands on approach to experiencing the landscape in a way that's very much part of Finnish cultural heritage. And it's a way of challenging myself. Going for a longer ride in cold winter's day or fixing some faulty electrics in a distant forest road and getting back home again aren't always fun but they're rewarding. I think these things combined makes it one of my favourite things.

Here's two more. I took the one with a sidecar about an hour later than the one I poster earlier. And that another one is from last spring.
