This month's theme is heritage.

History is something that is in the past, but heritage are the things we took with us to the present. It can be almost anything: tangible or intangible, inspirational or depressing, small or large. Medieval cathedrals are heritage, Finnish coffee culture is heritage and those spoons you got from your parents are heritage too. It is something that we take from those who came before us and pass on to those who come after us.

So let's photograph heritage! You can picture buildings, old plates, something that you plan to give your children, historical traumas, genetic diseases, food recipes, religious beliefs etc. Any heritage that has some special meaning or interest to you, your society or the whole human race.

You can also write something about it, but no need if you don't want to.

...

Let's carry on the heritage peter k. started in december:

Submissions can be OLD prints/negatives that were taken earlier in the year (or prior)

Submissions can be NEW prints/negatives taken during this month

And here's one to get things going. This one is OLD. I took it about five years ago.

We have this problematic heritage in Finland. Due to many historical reasons alcohol has been a problem in Finland for many generations. Fortunately drinking amongst young people has dropped considerably in last decade or so. But it still lives in Finnish culture: the regrettable heritage of alcohol misuse.

I found these two liquor bottles in the forest close to my grandparents place. The bottles are old, I believe they have been there for few decades. And I have a hunch about who left them there. A local guy who used to go to the forest alone to get drunk. He inherited quite a lot of forest and drank it all down his throat. My father bought some of his forest so those bottles are going to be part of my inheritance.

Ooh, that explains one of the central themes found in one Martial Industrial project from Finland - Karjalan Sissit! Thanks for the insight, lovely deranged tunes.

NEW ...
... Arista Edu 400 shot @ 200 ... MF baby speed... F16/22 @ 1/2 sec. Developed in D76 1:1 for 9.5 min Scanned and lightly sharpened.

So my friend and neighbor from decades ago, who was working down at Rollies Camera in uptown Sedona, said "Hey, why not sell your fathers outdated gear, and get a digital camera and lets go shooting."
So we dug all the old stuff out.
My goodness what a heap. Never really got into it before, as at the time we had our own old 35mm, but hadn't used it in years.

So there we were.

Three cameras. A 35mm, 9x12 folder, and a large format 3x4.
Full set of filters, lenses, and a mess of associated gear.
Phew, sitting there with this stuff all around me, on my lap and on the floor was simply amused and totally amazed, ... and staring at it, ... said to my self, ..
Hey all we need is film!!!

And so it started.

PhotoGear .jpg

Well got started first by using the 35mm Nikomat Ftn SLR, and took the film for developing at the local Walgreens.
When we got into the 3x4 speed, discovered they didn't develop large format, so began the process of learning how to develop my own after having to send it away.
Then my purchased Gossen meter died, and said, what the heck, we got a Western Ranger 9 of my dad's. and all we need to do is covert it from mercury batters to modern ones. So did that, and been using it ever since.

Note the photo, from the early 50's, with my mother and father, located on Jones Beach N.Y. A child is staring at the camera, which is now sitting in the image to the right, and been well used to date since that time and till now.

Epson Scan 004_edited-2.jpg

Also notice the unopened 3x4 Sheet Film, which is still unopened, of Super Panchro-Press type B Film... what ever that is.

Ha and a repair notice, located above the FTN in the image, for the FTN dated 3/21/86 for $78.27.
For repair of shutter, film transport, cleaning, meter, clean and lube and switch circuit repaired.
Cheap by today standards, but then that was a long time ago, but the old equipment is still be used and loved today.
Thanks for this heritage dad . .

A Hopi Prayer

Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there,
I do not sleep:
I am a thousand winds that blow;
I am the diamond glints on the snow;
I am the sunlight on ripened grain;
I am the gentle rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave.
I am not there.
I did not die.
For everything beautiful you see
will bring a memory of me.

OLD ..
Well seems Heritage needs some help, so where going to Mother Nature, and take a look at how she has changed the scene over the years here in our local heritage surroundings.

Sorry have no before images, although you can see this same formation in the old movie that stared John Wayne and Gail Russel titled, .. Angel and the Badman.
So go ahead and view the last four minutes of the film, and see if the formation has changed any over the last 75 years.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkIYolapTeg

Fact is, it was the very first one that Wayne he was allowed to produced, way back in 1946. The same birth year of this 3x4 speed, that shot the image below.
BTW: ... Gee we wonder why :whistling: ... but the formation is known as 'Coffee Pot'. ...

Some more background, .. John Wayne used the Sedona and the Village of Oak Creek locations for all the filming. A lot of westerns were shot in this area before it became more populated and today, the area shown in the last scene, is now a subdivision, filled with homes. And when created, all the streets where named after a lot of the movies shot in the area.

CoffeePot _edited-1.jpg

This image was shot a couple of years ago in Oct 2020, with a roll film back on the 3x4 speed which was inherited from my dad. (Reference post #6 )
Extachrome100 .. f16@60 ... Only cropped and sharpened a little.

Hmmm referring to the information on your Flickr site, that both of these images where shot with Kentmere pan 400 35mm.and both pushed two stops.
Never used this film before, but on research found that it is mild contrast, with subtle tones, and has very good exposure latitude.
Going to have to try some, for here in the bright southwest we to often have problems with to much contrast. :wondering:

It's quite forgiving and flat - linked video will point out its features better than I could : )

A bit of backstory first.
As I expect may apply to many of you, my camera bags tend to collect things over time. Sometimes that is good, because when you need something unusual, it might be in the bag. At other times, those extra things can get in the way.
And as I know applies to many of you, I have a lot (too many?) of medium format film cameras, and bags to go with them.
One of the things I like to do is attach a film box end to a camera whenever I have film loaded into it, in order to ensure I know that film is loaded, and which one.
All of which leads to each of the bags having a bunch of film box ends in them.
Late last year, I used my last roll of Kodak Plus-X in 120.
I've got a few bulk loaded rolls of 35mm Plus-X left, and after that, it will be goodbye forever to a film that I have enjoyed using, off and on, for decades :sad:.
You might say that Plus-X and I share a little bit of "Heritage" together.
(And now you are thinking, he is finally getting to the point!).
So the other day, upon observing a few Plus-X box ends in one of my bags, I decided to go through a bunch of the bags and round up all of the Plus-X box ends, to be stored or recycled, as seems appropriate.
Which gave me an idea for a submission here.
I gathered together a few other, even older Kodak branded photographic items and arranged them along with the Plus-X box ends and the lower half of a Plus-X Pro Pack box.
A little front lighting from a ceiling light, combined with window light from above and behind, combined with a fleece throw, and I was ready. The camera used to take the photo is a Mamiya 645 Pro with the 80mm macro lens. I used that new fangled T-Max 100 film that I've been working with as a replacement for Plus-X.
I think I'll call it "Plus-X Heritage". This is a scan, with a little bit of faux toning, because it seems appropriate.

New Braunfels, Texas, my local community, was founded in 1845 by Prince Carl of Solms. He named the town in honor of his home, Braunfels, Germany. German heritage and traditions are celebrated regularly. The “big” event each year is Wurstfest (Sausage festival), spanning ten days in early November.

My photo submission is from the 2012 Wurstfest. I happened to be walking by one of the music tent areas with my Nikon F as a young girl was being taught a traditional German dance, and heritage was being passed-on.

Ah yes, and now years later, perhaps she still is, not only dancing but also passing it on and teaching new friends.

I'm sorry I kept you waiting. I was too busy doing nothing (on a vacation) that I forgot the whole thing!

The one who gets to pick next month's theme is.... peter k.!

It's a strong scenery where natural and cultural heritage are combined in interesting way. I should watch that movie. I think the last time I watched old westerns was almost twenty years ago.
