I would like to announce the theme for our MSA November / December 2020 :
The theme I'm thinking of is ''record album cover art''.
I guess almost everyone here has a favorite record album or a favorite musician / band / singer or song - whatever.
Please take a photograph that you think would make great album cover art. Square format is not necessary.
It would be a nice addition to hear about the album, the musicians / singer or just about the song you have in mind.
Guidelines for the MSA : https://www.photrio.com/forum/threa...vised-2015-07-further-revised-2019-07.126124/

Have fun !

This sounds like a great choice and a lot of fun!
A reminder to everyone that your photos must be taken no earlier than November 1, 2020 and that the Guideline rules apply with respect to analogue capture and manipulations.
Given current circumstances, and with some trepidation, I thought I should again mention that there is nothing wrong with submitting scans of slides, negatives or lab prints.
I'll do my stuff with Sticky threads and the updated theme list.
I'll also adjust the thread title slightly, for consistency with others.
And I vow to get some more darkroom work done this time, so that I can participate more!
I'm guessing that we might see some YouTube links in this thread.

I think we should stipulate square images if we are going for record covers. Just my 2 cents.

I think that should be up to macfred, but I do see where you are coming from.
Maybe macfred still listens to cassettes .

While these two are not eligible since I made these some time ago but always thought they would make good album covers. The Hendrix image was on Trix35mm that I have printed analog, platinum/palladium from an enlarged negative, platinum/palladium on cotton vellum backed by 24ct gold leaf and digital on cotton paper. The Bob Marley was from a HP5 4x5 pinhole also printed platinum/palladium and digitally as well. I just wanted to share and perhaps will get the ball rolling.

Hmmm, ... Oh what a beautiful unique theme, but you may do me in.
. Thinking of my dads old custom made record trunk box, he made, for his classic 78 records. Trouble is they are stored in a small outside shed, under a mess of other stuff, and its winter here. .
A challenge on top of a challenge.
Well will see... he he...

Hi Paul
I hope you either got a cactus or a bunch of needles. you need to change needles often with a gramophone.. some folks use cactus needles, they do the trick.

I have a hundred new needles and am waiting on a delivery of 1000. It also came with a couple of tins with various original needles, some of which look organic.
The gramophone was built in 1955 and was one of the last of the wind ups HMV made, the mechanics are very good, just had to lube and do a few wind ups and all is good. Can take it on picnics.
There's a lot of music I wasnt aware of like Vernon Dalhart and other pioneers of US and Canadian country music as well as Australian. Yodelling was big in Australia in the Forties and fifties.
Unfortunately old 78's of that era didn't have any album art, just advertising on the sleeve. Album covers didn't seem to come along till the fifties.

Ladies and gentlemen ?
I think we have a few days before we will close this competition because large amount of participants ...

Thanks for the reminder @macfred - I almost forgot! I did shoot some film during this time frame and think I may have a few contenders, I just need to dust off the old scanner. Hopefully I can get that done tomorrow.

Hi folks,
Clearly we have run into a dry spell when it comes to MSA participation. macfred's theme is a really interesting one (IMHO) but despite best intentions from me and others we haven't seen the surge in entries that it deserves.
I attribute this to a number of factors, including the time of year and the greatly constraining influence of the pandemic.
macfred and I have exchanged messages, and at my suggestion, he has agreed to a proposal that this assignment continue for another two months - to the end of February, 2021.
If anyone has any objections, please post them either in this thread or in a Conversation (PM) with me.
In the meantime, in the next couple of days I'll start a new thread asking for people's thoughts about the MSA - whether it should be changed, lengthened, shortened, have the rules updated or, should it be stopped (hope not).

Ok, snowed in last couple of days, and now the sun is bright without a cloud in the sky, but we thought we give this a try. But a question. Rather than an album, how about just a cover for a particular song? Can we use that for this theme? As an example were using this image, which is not eligible, as it was taken in fall of 2018, and therefore, we also added some text, for clarity, making it a complete cover. ;-)

Turn, turn turn .jpg

Pete Seeger wrote this song in the late 1950s. According to interviews, Seeger says he wrote it in fifteen minutes because he was mad at his publisher.
Here is Pete with Judy Collins 1966

.. and the Byrds which made it famous..
