My last minute entries. Considered just skipping it. I did shoot some colour, only to find the last place in town wasn't even sending colour 120 somewhere else any more. It is being developed down in the city, but I don't have it back yet. My computer is down, so these are ithingy snaps of a couple of lith prints.

Last minute entries from me as well. I shot them 1 1/2 months ago, but I haven't been able to get into the darkroom to print them, and when it comes to scanning, I procrastinate.

They are here, and in the MSA Gallery.

Their titles are, respectively, "Slide From The Bottom", "Slide From The Side" and "Picnic"

Matt and Sly: great images.

I browsed through the MSA Gallery just now to see what the result were.
There is a wide verity of interpretations of this theme and some fine images.
I'll go back tomorrow and see what my winner would be (just for fun), but I'm glad I'm not the judge for this theme.
I enjoyed myself browsing and viewing, so thank you all for sharing.

This was a really close call. If I could declare winners in two categories, I would.

And the winner is....

(drumroll)....

I really love the use of geometry here - so many repeating patterns and shapes, and it's quite easy to lose yourself in it and not think about what it actually is (a metal picnic table setup) but also come back and recognize the object, then lose yourself in the abstraction again.

I have a runner-up.

(blasted APUG image hosting silliness... I wish this would display bigger!)

I think this fulfilled the assignment the best of all the entries. I like the use of repetition of pattern from the out-of-view light source (Venetian window shade?) that is picked up and distorted by the glass and its shadow. However, I can't in good conscience give the win to a non-subscriber - it's not fair to those who support the site.

So congrats, MattKing, you're the winner and the chooser of our next MSA theme! And congrats to everyone for submitting work. This was a tough challenge and I really appreciate all the effort that went in to each entry. Keep shooting and keep thinking!

On a separate note, and bit of administrivia:

Please, if you're going to take part in the MSA, pony up the APUG membership fee - it's not much at all, It's only once a year, it really helps with running the site, and it gives you lovely perks like being able to upload images to the APUG gallery, which makes them much easier to share in this and any other discussion thread.

I've thought about this a bit, and have chosen a theme for the next MSA.

I thought I would make one comment though about FlyingCamera's decision.

I too thought I.G.I.'s entry was very good. As nothing has been said about subscribers vs members previously, I would have chosen to name him the winner, and encouraged him to support APUG by subscribing. But I respect FlyingCamera's decision to factor in subscription status when deciding.

Anyways, here is a link to the new thread: (there was a url link here which no longer exists).

And I will consider subscriber status as a "plus" when evaluating entries.

Hi Matt, congratulations! Can't wait to see the next assignment you've given us (will check the (there was a url link here which no longer exists) right away).

About the membership thingy: I agree with FlyingCamera that everyone who could also should consider becoming a subscriber and thus support this wonderful forum. And as a MSA judge he is free to consider every and any factor he needs to make a decision, so no problem there.

Having that said, let us remember that the MSA is (and has always been) open to any member and subscriber of APUG, so let us not make the status of a participant into a rule as such in general. All contributions can and may be posted in the MSA thread itself (please do as well) and can and may be uploaded to the MSA Gallery for broader sharing and viewing among all subscribers. However, to upload and view the Gallery you must be a subscriber.
In short: a non-subscribing member must be able to win a MSA also if he enters a perfect image matching the theme perfectly.

And please all do consider to become a subscriber and help keeping APUG online.

(Sotty about my ranting - now let's go over and see what Matt has thought up for us in the next MSA.

Who would have thought money entail privilege even in the MSA...

It's not about privilege. It's about supporting APUG to take advantage of the perks. It's called doing the right thing. To post to the gallery, you need to subscribe. And how is it fair to everyone else who has paid their (VERY INEXPENSIVE) subscriptions, in some cases for a decade or more, for someone to be able to organize a function and award a prize, such as it is, without having subscribed?

We appreciate it when people subscribe to support the site, but in general, we'd rather not have people pressuring each other to subscribe.

As for the rules of any given member organized function, it's up to the members who are organizing it to make the rules, and APUG generally doesn't take a position in such cases. If the function requires posting to the galleries, then one has to be a paid subscriber to post to the galleries, but if you would like to post the results of the exchange in a forum thread, that's up to you.

If people are getting something positive out of exchanges and member organized functions like this, then we think that will enhance loyalty to the site, and participants will be inclined to subscribe, because they want to support something they are involved in. If more people get involved and we keep the atmosphere positive, and if users show their initiative by subscribing, I think those who haven't subscribed yet will come around.

Thank you, David, for the clarity on the APUG policy on this matter.

So I guess the MSA still is (and was) open to all members and subscribers with an equal chance of winning, most and fore all depending on their skills to make a good photograph and to come as close as possible to the theme of the MSA - all to the indisputable eye of the residing judge.

Let's make this MSA a positive experience that will make members spontaneous subscribe by themselves for the sheer fun of it and for wanting to be a part of this great APUG family - like David said
(... and that's exactly how it went with me ...)

@Matt: can you as the residing judge agree/rule on that? (I don't think you didn't mean anything else than support this great site?)

Yes, you de facto instituted the paid subscription into a privilege, according to which posters should not participate in the MSA on equal footing.

I.G.I.

All that sound charming, but as you see things work differently in practice. As I said to the TheFlyingCamera, had it been stated from the onset that MSA is closed to non subscribers would have been okay as a clearly stated limitation. This is not the case however. Instead individual prejudiced attitudes are at play where participants are divided in two tiers depending whether they pay or not. I find this pushy, crass, and offensive. And to me such manners give a strong incentive not to support or participate in forums that foster them.

I.G.I., you're probably right but please let us put this behind us, shake hands and start taking photographs again in the good spirit of the APUG family. I'm sure TheFlyingCamera didn't mean to exclude anybody, he's just an enthousiast ambassador for APUG and spoke in that manor. And if so, please forgive us if we made anyone feel lesser welcome on this forum

I'll even offer to pay your first year contribution to experience all the benefits of this forum first hand and to be able to post in the MSA Gallery as well (just PM me).
How about that?

I have had some further thoughts on this, as well as some communication from others.

I'll post a suggestion later today, and see where we go from there.

I'm not going to keep fighting this out in public; I've stated my opinion, and I stand by it. I'm sorry if you feel that I'm doing something wrong by holding that opinion. Perhaps I was rash in making that judgment call without consensus from the other participants in the thread, or by not getting clarification on past history. For that, and for any hurt feelings that might have been caused by it, I apologize. It was a very tough decision for me to balance who to recognize for their images. Perhaps it would have been better for me (and everyone else involved) to have just announced the "winner", and nothing more.
